I actually enjoy early Santana and Supernatural allowed me to introduce friends to guitar oriented music. That said, I can see where people find him overrated. I think the solo for Lick It Up works for the song (but I'm biased lol).

Worst solo -
In This River - BLS (messed up the chance for something soulful to instead play wankery)
Purple Haze - Hendrix (I've fallen out with this one, the rest of the song is great, but the solo misses the mark for me)
Cowboys From Hell - Pantera (the double stops just seem out of place)
For the Love of God - Steve Vai (yeah, this just doesn't do anything for me)

For starters:
Tears For Fears - Everybody Want to Rule the World. This song did not need a guitar solo and the one at the end is super terrible. Especially if you listen to the extended mix.

Any others?

oh man.. I love that solo..lol

I always liked it, too, and thought the guitar work was pretty awesome considering the niche that band fit in... :idk:

My thoughts too....go figure :idk:

x a million. I’ve never understood why his lame, unimaginitive pentatonic blather was ever given a nod, much less a sig guitar.

I dunno man, I guess this is a generational divide going on here...listen to Moonflower...she's not there, Europa, soul sacrifice...that record shaped me a guitar player. Different strokes I suppose....

THIS. 100%.

Killer song that just stops randomly to allow 2 dudes to masturbate on tape.

I 100% disagree with this opinion. Man that song was the f'ing shit, and that solo (not sure what you mean by "2 dudes") is a rock guitar solo classic if there ever was one. Not sure if you guys were around yet when it was released, but I just have to say growing up in the 70's and listening to all those incredible bands back then, I consider myself to be very lucky. As a 30ish friend told, "You had Led Zep, I had Nickelback".

Just curious; I guess both you of guys can play that lead to Heartbreaker perfectly?

I've had a few tonight so I'll make a stand. A lot of Santana hate here and I completely get the animosity for his later work but I stand by Abraxas, Santana, and the record he cut with McLaughlin. Killer shit and it made a huge influence on me when I was younger/learning.

Whether or not I can play it perfectly is irrelevant because clearly JP couldn’t play it perfectly either.

I have always thought this! Especially when you contrast this with his other solos and his ability to rip on live Zep performances. I’ve always scratched my head at why they released this recording when he is clearly a much better player than this solo represents.

The song itself kicks ass.

that's the beauty of that solo. No matter how much I think I fucked it up, I really didn't. As long as the behind the nut bendy part's in the right place, it always finishes with a great crowd response.

As a big of a fan of Neil Young, anything that he takes a solo on just sucks....

I'm pretty sure that he's quoted as saying that "yeah, I don't really care about hitting wrong notes"

He's great on acoustic and songwriting, but soloing...................

And yeah, Sweet Child of Mine, aside from having facepalm lyrics, the solo is just a wah wank.
