Broslinger, other bourbon fans? Beam/Suntory fire.

45,000 barrels of Jim Beam held/Suntory owned whiskey burned last week. And this week the river is filling with dead fish due to the pollution/fallout. This is a massive amount of booze burned and leaked out into the environment. And as someone that's used minute amounts of alcohol to euthanize fish with incurable diseases over the years, I know how little alcohol it takes to put a fish down. They can't process it at all, and it's near instant death on contact.

So, first the tears over the loss of so much American produced alcohol. Then the tears over the environmental impact, which can't, at this moment, be completely accurately assessed.

I imagine this will have a large impact going forward on the alcohol business in america. In the short term, prices will rise and shortages will ensue. Considering how much of the american whiskey business is tied up in Suntory held properties, I'd be curious how many brands will be impacted by this one incident.

I doubt it will impact the market much - in Kentucky alone - there are over 7.5 million barrels of bourbon - so this loss is less than 1% of just Kentucky Bourbon (.6% to be exact)

FWIW, it won't affect bourbon availability according to Suntory/Beam. It's like 1% of what Beam had in storage, and none of it was very old.

We'll see what happens environmentally. FWIW, these aging barn fires aren't uncommon. They've dealt with it before. It happens every few years or so.

I'm glad it wasn't old barrels that went up, but I already see local stores claiming shortages from the fire. And we're in South Dakota, where they wouldn't realistically see any actual impact for several weeks at a minimum.

Odd that I haven't heard much about other fires over the years. News was making it out like this was some huge never-before-seen ordeal. I suppose I fell victim to the modern hysteria machine.

Your local stores are price gouging pieces of shit.

1996 - Heaven Hill lost 90,000 barrels (14% of their bourbon!). It killed a bunch of fish
2000 - wild turkey lost a bunch. It killed 228,000 fish
2003 - beam had a bourbon fire tornado. 800,000 gallons went into the creek.
2006 - Buffalo Trace
2019 - Oz Taylor's rickhouse collapsed.

It's pretty normal, dude. Its a dry wooden building full of pure alcohol. They are next to rivers and creeks since they use the water to make the product. It's not a huge deal.

Not the first time this observation has been made.

There are two places local that aren't jumping on the price rise, and luckily one of them is right up the street. But I know the owner there and he's pretty proud of having the best pricing in town despite being a smaller shop. He's also got fabulous case discounts for when peeps need to stock up. I really need to go visit him again soon.
