there isn't a "hell" but those poor folks are super fucked .

Fire burns indiscriminately.
Some guys like a challenge. Not me.

terrible stuff and i hope no GGF forumites or their friends or family is out in that absolute hell.
hiking out west in montana, i turned a corner and was face-to-face with an adult male grizz that was 15 heel-to-toe lengths of my boot away (measured afterwards) and it snorted at me twice and yes, it was incredibly terrifying but the absolute most primal fear i've experienced is an out-of-control forest fire. it hits on something so deep back in your brain...
i don't want to change the subject but this is relevant. if you haven't seen the michael luciano footage from him escaping the giant fires in gatlinburg, TN a few years back, you need to watch it.
watch the whole thing. this is probably the single scariest thing i've ever seen.

^ this.
grizzlies all have very individual personalities as well as comfort zones. we were on the side of a cliff (glacier national park) and it wasn't budging and there was no way around it. i hike with some emergency survival stuff which includes a whistle. after banging rocks, hollering at the bear, etc... i remembered my whistle. took it out, blew it and the bear stood up on its hind legs, cocked its head in curiosity like a dog, went back down on all 4s and walked off. adrenaline pumping for hours afterwards.
fire is much scarier.

When he stood up he immediately had a curious look on his face, cocked head and ears forward, which wasn’t threatening and we had backed up to about 60’ away at that point. Rounding the corner and being what my best estimate is by multiplying heel to toe steps and s size 10 boot, 12.5’ away and having it looking right into your eyes and snoring was scarier

Run into a black bear in TN once. All I had on me was a 38 special with Plus P ammo. We just stood very still and had no problem. She even had cubs close by
I found out later that bear spray is the BEST for bears

Yup and it isn’t even close. I carry foxlabs 5.3 and it was, and I think still is, the hottest on the planet. Still, things like this can happen.
