Mixer Advice?

Post by musicmanmu »

Hey guys,
I have been looking into hybrid style mixers that I could use for both live applications (solo/duo acoustic) and as an interface into a DAW. The two that seem to fit the bill are:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... th-effects

and

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... th-effects

I'm totally new to recording, so I have no clue about which might be better. I would be using my MacBook and some sort of DAW (again, beyond Garageband I don't know much about any others). Am hoping to just get started recording simple acoustic and vocals stuff, maybe add some overdubs, bass, etc.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

What's the max # of channels you will need live?

I wouldn't mix the 2 worlds, if it were me.

EDIT: nevermind. I missed the fact that those mixers have USB interfaces.

That said, I would still get something separate for each purpose.

technically both would work, I don't have experience with either but I can tell you I hate the presonus preamps in their other boards... I use the Yamaha MG series board for both live and simple tracking at home and it works fine for me.

Honestly 4 is as many as I'd ever need probably.

I agree - I had thought to get two different things as well, but was just trying to save a bit of money and space.

I can also vouch for Yamaha MG stuff working fine especially for live acoustic. (I have no idea if any of them have interfaces built in.)

FWIW, I've had good luck with Focusrite interfaces doing what they say, but they are not for live stuff.

Thanks - I definitely looked at the MG mixers, but they don't seem to allow for multitracking? I wanted at least the ability to record two tracks at once to a DAW.

Given that I don't need the SD functionality, and that it's $150 more, the Allen & Heath seems to be the way to go...

yeah, the newer MG series have USB interfaces built in to them... I use mine to record Podcasts and have some some tracking of guitars at home a few times

Good to hear - just pulled the trigger on the Zedi 10FX. We'll see how it goes. I'm not planning to open a studio, so as long as it's decent I will be cool.
