saw mastodon and primus last night

Post by Sasquatch »

mastodon opened up for primus. i figured it would be the other way around but nope.

mastodon: played well, sang well, cool backgroud animated videos that were psychedelically scary. they were way too loud with ear plugs in. every time the kick drum hit it felt like getting punched in the temple. at one point, i felt like the combination video and head kicks were going to give me a seizure. brent hinds is an asshole and between a song was complaining he wanted to switch sides b/c his side's people sucke and then single-out and cussed out a fan for not giving it his all. well brent, you just fucking stand there staring at your fingerboard, giving the crowd no energy with which to work. brent and bill were just standing there staring at the fretboards. troy was giving some energy but overall they had the energy of a golden girls episode.

primus: they turned the volume down considerable and had it at the perfect level. loud enough to overcome the crowd but you didn't need earplugs. they sounded amazing... crystal clear. les is a mad genius and overall they had a good bottom-end beat in every song and the crowd enjoyed it. i mean, they didn't have the energy of RATM back in the day, but it was good energy nonetheless.

i came into this concert a mastodon fan. i left not being a fan. they were worse than in 1998 when i saw creed. fuck.

Interesting, Primus opened for Mastodon in OKC. My friends were there to see Claypool, pretty sure they left mid-Mastodon. Said there were some scary looking folks in the crowd who all turned out to be very polite and quite nice.

I've seen Primus a number of times and they are great. I've always wanted to see Mastodon but I've always said that Brent Hinds seems like he would drive me absolutely nuts. Belligerent bellowing drunk. I could be wrong but I have always got that impression from the vibe he puts off. They are playing in the Ozarks the week before we are down there and I've seriously thought about going down to catch the show.

Too bad about Mastodon. When I saw them the show was really energetic and the show was killer.

Is Brent the one with the tattoos on his head? He looks like absolute white trash.

Glad Primus was cool though.

I'm going to see this tour next month. TBH, I'm most excited about the opening band All Them Witches - wish they got more time.

Primus - looking forward to. Only seen a few times...first was at Lollapalooza in '93.

Mastodon - I've seen several times and enjoy less with each (the Crack the Skye tour was amazing, however). Sucks you didn't enjoy it.

You would have to be cool to have a motto like that. :D

more whatnot

yeah, brent hinds is an alcoholic and needs some help. he looked sickly. to his credit he did play a couple of great solos but he just has that 1 2-string trick he goes to. i know their "riffs" are pretty unorthodox but i think with some practice they could pull off some no-looks. the biggest thing is that they don't move around at all. when i saw velvet revolver a few years back, slash and duff were constantly changing sides, jumping up on boxes, moving forward and backward.... it looked like a pilates workout dvd. troy was trying to give some energy but he looked awkward. overall, i am glad i saw them and they did play really well but yeah, i couldn't enjoy it b/c it was as loud as an A-10 warthog doing a low pass flyover WITH the guns on. the kick drum was so loud it hurt my chest. not much of a fan now... at least of them live. i had a headache and felt beat-up and i had ear plugs in.

les is total nerd genius. he was talking about camping out near a lake, about 30 miles from the show, and how when it was late at night he took all his clothes off and ran through the woods naked. that quirky, nerdy singing voice he has (which totally works with their music) is actually his real voice; that's what he sounds like when he talks! clearest and best sounding bass i've ever heard in a live environment and it was great to see him using a rack on stage.

what also surprised me was all the people standing around in the lobby during mastodon, waiting for primus. i even heard several people with mastodon shirts on that appeared to be in their late teens/early twenties saying "i cannot go back in there."

overall i am glad i went.

got tickets to see metallica in january. never seen them and i've got general admission - floor tickets, which means standing there for 3 or 4 hours before the show. i'm going to have to start some running in the snow, situps in a barn, deadlift an ox-cart rocky III russian training shit if i am to endure that. probably pick up some adult diapers so i can piss myself too.

I remember when he tried to get the crowd to stop saying that. Didn't work.

Primus, in my opinion, works best live when they don't have three hours to play. A 90-minute show is much more focused, and the crowd is much more wild. They'll never get that energetic studio feel again, unless they can get a producer who can restrict their jam band tendencies.

As for Mastodon, I'm disappointed that they're not on point live.

I saw the first night of the tour @ Red Rocks.

I thought all 3 bands sounded great. Mastodon being too loud is kind of on the sound guys no?

RE the solos, it's not like he's improvising solos live, that's what's on the albums. Calling out the audience is a dick move though... everybody paid their $$ to get in, who are you to decide how they should enjoy your shit?

I also really don't care if the guys in a band are dancing around on the stage. I'd much rather they play well standing in place than go crazy and sound like shit or even worse, not really play at all and have a canned track playing your parts. There was a band here that was popular for a while about 15 years ago, Finger Eleven, where the guitar player would go absolutely batshit on stage flailing around. I saw them a couple times opening for other bands and IMO that took away from the overall show.

I have been enjoying Crack the Sky and Emperor of Sand lately. Its a shame they have such a poor rep for live shows.

Also a shame about Brent's rep. Do I remember something about him getting a beating by System of a Down's posse bad enough to require putting him into a medically induced coma?

^ Yeah I'm pretty sure it was the bassist for System of a Down that knocked him the fuck out. Most likely for talking shit and expecting to get away with it as usual, if I had to guess
