Impromptu jam with my sons last night

Post by Ostinato Rubato »

I've been little by little trying to expose my kids to playing music, whatever catches their interest at the time. Nothing has really stuck in a daily sense but over the past 2-3 years they've picked up guitars, played keyboards, written rhymes over dope beats I make in da studio, and one of them has been playing drums in a school band and will be performing soon.

So out of the blue boy #2 says, "Hey dad... can I play some music with you? Can we play electric guitar?" and then boy #3 says, "Can I play with you guys? I'll get my acoustic..." So we went to my room and #2 starts playing this simple repeating melody that he had come up with (G: 2 beats, F#: 2 beats, E: 4 beats) on the first string which is an E minor melody. #3 started playing some chords that he's been learning with the school band cause he plays drums on one song but guitar on another. Turns out he knows Gmaj, D5 (can't play the full major yet), and Emin which is a progression that is correct for that melody. So I launched the DAW grabbed slate drums and looped a simple beat. They started jamming together for the first time ever. It was really cool. They are 11 and 9.

Then I showed #2 how to do a power chord and I turned up the gain on the jubilee. He may never be the same again.

This sounds like the best argument for having kids I have ever heard. Insta-band! Well, that and having them do all of the chores around the house.

That's awesome Mike, hopefully they get hooked sooner or later. We had my brother-in-law out for a visit with his wife and their 8 year old son. The kid was all about the music room, and we put on a "concert" for the fam. Good feelz for sure!

I came in to rip on you, but this sounds super awesome. My son was asking me to play guitar in the basement last week, pointing to different guitar cases and saying "that one" and when I'd play for a bit, he'd say "play too" and grabbed a pick and started strumming with it on my lap. He's 2.

Two is fun. This was my daughter a couple months ago. I was working on some stuff and she came into the room, grabbed this mic, and started singing. Absolutely fucking adorable.

Training kids to do chores is so awesome. They make me a pbj in the morning for my commute too.

Boy #3 got interested in drums and I told him that drummers are really hard to find and he was like :hmm: and started getting serious about drums in the school band. I just hope that doesn't mean he actually adopts the character of a drummer

It was the first time they've gotten something resembling a groove going and there's potential. They had fun with it and that's what will help it stick. I would love to one day glove slap their asses if they ever think understand "."

That's awesome, Mike!

I've been trying to teach some kids at our church how to play some "basic" chords, and they're not coming out of the "frustration" stage very well. Showed how to read a chord diagram, drew a few open chords: E, Em, G, C, D. They struggle for a while trying to get fingers in place, and then it's all :nope:

I'm wondering if I should just show them power chords or partial open chords... Or just get them ukes.

Yeah I'd start with 3 string versions of the chords starting with the 1st-3rd strings. It's easier to get going. And also power chords on the 6th string. They'll bridge the gap and play full chords eventually but this way they can have some success and it can become fun.
