Rate My Mix Please.

Post by TurboPablo »

Comp'd and Eq'd like 7 times.

https://soundcloud.com/heezzies/tuesdaybackguitareminor

I made a drumbeat last week that came out pretty OK. Everything measured and counted out good. So I picked a key(Em) and decide to make it a song exercise. Which turned into a multi-tracking/mixing exercise  So I purposely kept the melody simple and stripped and focused on trying to capture it correctly.

Anyway, White Strat(Keystones!), MarkIII, Greenbacks on the left, T-75's on the right. G&L L-1000 Bass through my Keeley GC-2 Limiter and Tech21 Sans amp coming down the middle. All guitar and bass parts went through my WA-12. Drums are EZD2. I forget which kit. I think it's the "Basic" one. I did pan the kick and snare a tiny bit to the left and right each. Everything has a EQ preset on there from a RealEQ Vst. Drums and bass have a comp EQ. Honestly, I need to document this stuff better.

If you listen to the left side on the very first part, you can hear how the Q-Filter is rolled all of the way off on my Strat. Sounds almost acoustic-ish. Such a cool little tone gadget. Also, I still need to figure out what to do in the last minute. But I figure Fretless will enjoy hearing the L-1000 on it's own. It's a brutal bass.

Also, I've realized that Bass is really hard to mix and my MarkIII just keeps getting better and better.

Volume OK? Levels? Mix?

Please feel free to opine and advise. Constructive criticism is obviously welcome.

TL;dR Rate my mix.

Straight away, youre lacking a little low end. The bass can be heard, but theres no balls in the kick or bass.
Otherwise, it sounds nice.
Cool song!! :beavis:

Yeah sorry I've meant to listen to this since yesterday and I'm glad it got bumped.

I also think you could bring up the lower frequencies. On the speakers I'm listening to I had to really listen to hear the bass. Not sure if you high passed the guitars but you should if you haven't and bring the bass track up. If you can put a little more kick into the mix or give it a choice frequency boost I think it will all blend well.

Everything else about the guitars and drums sounded solid. The tone is late 70's early 80's rock to my ears and works really well with the riffing.

I just spent some time compressing and EQ'ing the fuck out of it. Which really brought up the low end. Made a huge difference. Then it wouldn't render. I did get the project saved though. I just need to let my computer chill for a bit.

Used some different comp and EQ presets. Along with a saturation VST.

As for the bass, I should have recorded it a bit louder.

Yeah, your kick is there now, its got a soft punch.
The bass guitar just seems kinda lost in there. I can hear it, but it doesnt seem to be in the right frequencies...

I can hear it in my monitors almost fine. So that means I should mix it a bit louder than I think is necessary here on my Mackies. It was also a matter of pickup selection. The back setting on my bass is monstrous sounding. In the headphones it was always too much. So I went with the front position.

Yeah, that's what I am trying to figure out. I feel like I can record guitar pretty OK now. I did well with cabs and mics. But with the Two Notes Torpedo Live, it's a cinch. There is a actual work flow now. Record a track, switch cabs in Torpedo, switch to track panned the other way, record. Soooo easy. It's really starting to breed some creativity.

Just do what Fretless does and make the other band member do all the mixing heavy lifting, sit back in robe and slippers, and say it's not right 20 times until it comes out how you want it.

Ok, my guess is your monitors are up against a wall. If so, move em someplace else. Try headphones, double check in the car, im not sure why, but thats always most telling. Anything to vary perspective though.

As far as bass is concerned, I pretty much have found a fender jazz or P is infallible. I bought something that SHOULD be better, but it isnt.

Like others have said, it could use some more thumpage from the bass n' drum department.

Seriously dig the riffage and tones.

My G&L L-1000 is pretty much a P-Bass. It thumps.I just need to bring it up in the mix.
