Tokyo Dawn Nova is a 4 band visual eq great for shaping everything. Free

Tokyo Dawn Slick EQ is a 3 band semi-parametric. nice for adding a bit of finishing. not for initial tone shaping though. free. I use it for mastering usually.

Am about to buy a Focusrite USB audio interface, so I'll check out the Red2.

the deal also included Red3 Compressor which is fire on bass, mang. bam! I love it for bass.

BTW, I would HIGHLY recommend getting something with more ins and outs.

The 2i2 sufficed for about 2 songs, then I got an 18i20. It's not uncommon to need 6-8 inputs for a guitar track.

You mean for physical microphones?

stereo pedal/amp setup = 2 mics.
want to use lofi mic for blending = 2 more mics
ambient room mic or 2 = 2 more mics.
maybe you're doing a direct signal for reamping or something. 2 more inputs

I'm just saying. 2 inputs will ruin your fun very quickly

It's not parametric but, the Waves GEQ is really cool. Mono and Stereo, 32 band graphic EQ. It's on sale right now.

Waves can be annoying to download plug-ins. First, you have to download Waves Central onto your computer (easy peasy). Then you have to find the correct Installer to download and unzip. I have a Mac OS 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) with ProTools 10. Had to ask Waves IT for help because, the don't make it easy to find the installer you need. When I downloaded the installer, I had to download a bundle of plug-ins and manually delete the ones I didn't pay for, before installing the ones I did pay for.
Their plug-ins rock but, installing them can be a pain in the ass.

I highly recommend the Waves Vocal Rider - it's better than a compressor for vocals.

Every once in a while, Waves sells their SSL E Channel Strip as a separate plug-in. Got it for $39 a few weeks ago: http://www.waves.com/plugins/ssl-e-channel

Yes you have to get the whole rack, but I don't think you'd be disappointed. You get A LOT of excellent components in the VMR.

Look up a download called solid 4010. Its an ssl 4000 eq and its free! Ive had some goid luck with quite a few freebies, for sure!

Same here, it was about two years ago when I got mine. I use the reverb plugin all the time. The redeq has a cool rhythm guitar preset which is pretty close to where I set my eq normally.

Lately I've been skipping the redeq and just using the hi and lo pass in Nadir.

So I'm guessing you're dialing out errything below 50Hz and above 4Khz ?

I've seen those controls while using Nadir, but never messed with them.

To be honest I don't pay any attention to that. I just spin the dials until I get rid of any annoying sizzle or flubbiness. I did some recording over the weekend and in that instance, I just bumped each deal a bit beyond their default positions.

Ive tried only a few, but the one I like best is Ignite PTEQ-X. The only reason why is I try to do very minimal EQing & it seems Im getting results without it sounding colored.

Id like to try a plethora of plugins, but so far, it works fine.

So the Ignite PTEQ-X is based on the Pultec EQ's? I downloaded it and will check it out tonight if I can.

What's the thinking on EQ ordering (EQ before cab, after CAB, before amp sim or after, etc).

And also, what about running more than one instance(or even multiple types) of an EQ plugin on the same track?

In the small amount of time I've played around with these EQ plugins, it does make a difference to my ears on the order you place them with your other VSTs.

I usually mic a cab, so the eq is going after. But if youre using IR's, theres that option, just see what works for you!

The ReaEQ works great if you don't mind the generic interface. If you need to do a shit ton of EQ'ing to a guitar track, you're probably better off working on mic positioning and laying down another take.

I spent some time working with the ReaEQ, and you're right. It's pretty comprehensive!

I ordered a new USB audio Interface from Whole Foods. It comes bundled with the Red EQ and compressors like BroSlinger told me about.

Excited to see what those plugins are like.

I love the toans I'm getting just running my tube map into load box => audio interface => Reaper.

But when you get into it, you realize that if you're playing a distorted guitar toan and you use a lot of palm muting/heavy pick hand attack stuff you need to be able to notch out 140~150Hz or you're gonna get that boomy shit going on your tracks.
