Looks like a softer material, plus wood would be extremely heavy.

Went to an AES convention and listened to a mechanical engineer explain, for about an hour, the math behind block diffusers (Skyline & Quadratic).
He had a PowerPoint presentation and performed some math examples. He explained that the diffuser can be tuned and built, to suit the geometry of the room and to suit the type of audio that would be played in the room. I'm sure there is some fact behind his lecture but, I'm not sure a block diffuser designed with math, would be any more effective than a home built diffuser, put together randomly.
IMHO, block diffusers are certainly the best looking and they certainly are effective at breaking up reflections.
Large, expensive, pro studios, need to make the room look sexy and they all have a few wooden block diffuser hanging around.
I've been in a few studios that hang them in the lobby and lounge room as art. One studio had one hanging on the wall in the coffee room.
When made of wood, they are heavy and even when made of foam, they take up more space than other types of acoustic treatment but, they are way cooler than Sonex tiles.
Always wanted to build a wooden one but, too much work.

I'm planning to build a couple 2'x2' (ish) squares for my little garage studio that'll be mounted behind my back (when I'm in mixing position). Not sure they'll help a great deal, but they sure look cool
