Sweetwater's 50 mic comparison
This is pretty sweet. Interesting to hear the differences.

FWIW,
kind of disappointed in the Warm WA-87. Had high hopes. doesn't sound like the U87 at all.
My suspicions were confirmed with the blue mics sounding bad, IMO.
Interesting how much better then mojave 301 sounds than the 201. I can hear the extra $200.
the AKG 414 XLII sounded great.
The Aston Spirit sounded really loud and strange, but not bad.
The Rodes were edgey and bad.

Thanks man. That was my dept...in conjunction with the studio, of course. We put a TON of work into it. It's been getting largely great reviews. Feels good. Glad it's useful!

I'll definitely check this out.
I love my C414s. I've owned RODES in the past and edgy is a pretty good description. I still think the NT5's are solid though.

Yeah, We figured that would happen. From an engagement perspective though, even the criticisms are pulling more clicks to the site.

Lynn is a champ for moderating that Gearslutz thread.

I thought I loved my pre-china light gray NT-1, but I hated it with my current gear in my last vocal session. The Shure SM7B really delivered.

We're looking at what the next batch will be. Wide categories with lots of options are best. We've considered:
Drum Mics
Guitar Amp Mics
Live Dynamic Mics
....the SM7B is my favorite vocal mic ever, but it's an outlier in categorization....

I don't want to badmouth either singer, because chances are, I know them both. But, it just wasn't my thing musically. The guy sort of sounds like a Hum fan singing P+W music. The female sounds like another Janis Joblin person.

"Recording the Performances
In order to preserve the singers’ voices (who were performing the same 60-second sample 50 times), we didn’t try to produce perfect vocal takes. There was some punching when lyrics were forgotten or misplaced, but most of what you hear will be single takes from start to finish. The tracks were selected and recorded and mixed by Mark Hornsby. We considered using a pop filter. Nah. What about highpass filtering the occasional P pops? Nah. Well, there’s certainly some pitches that could be tightened up. Nah. You’re hearing raw vocal tracks just like you would with any singer in the studio. You want tuning? You want compression? You want to add reverb and effects? Go right ahead. That’s why we’re offering a download with the original 24-bit/96kHz sound files as consolidated .wav files (both as a Pro Tools session and just as a folder of audio files to load into any DAW), so you can hear exactly what we heard in the studio."

this is giving me an idea.
instead of a drum jam, how about we redo the guitar parts for these vocal tracks. turn it into grunge, rap, country, shoegaze, etc. change the key.

Definitely the Guitar Amp Mics. Screw drummers...buncha undomesticated nosepicking knuckle draggers.

MA-301FET makes him sound like a crooner from the 50s in a good way.
C-1 sounds really good for $50
Aston Origin has a lot of bass, which can be good.
I only listened to the male voice. The ones I liked the best were : all the Audio Technica, all the Telefunken, Neumann U47 and U87, Rode NT1-A, AKG C414, Soundelux U195 and the Warm WA-87. I think the Telefunken AK-47 and ELA M 251 E sound the best. The AK-47 is worth $1900.
