Tolex replacement
Hey guys.Wondering if there is any noob friendly guide to re-doing a custom tolex color? Thanks in advance.
Re: Tolex replacement
One thing is to make sure you get all the old stuff off, sand it down nice and smooth and fill any voids because any small bumps or valleys will show up through the material. Use a fresh sharp blade for cutting the edges and trimming the excess. Probably best to watch a few youtube how to videos and then come back with any specific questions.

When you peel off the old tolex, use paint thinner to get all of the glue off and sand your cab/headshell to make sure it's completely smooth. Give it plenty of time to make sure all the paint thinner dries/evaporates before trying to apply the new tolex.
For glue, I've used medium-strength 3M (77 I think) and Loc-tite brand spray adhesive. Before spraying, use a pencil and a square to draw a straight line on your box where you want your seam to be and use it line up the the edge of your tolex. Spray both the back of the tolex and the outside of the box, and wait a fwe minutes until the spray gets a tacky texture. Pull your tolex tightly and slide your hand across the tole to apply it. Slide your hands along it to smooth out any bubbles (a rolling pin helps with this too if you have one. To get a well-hidden seam, leave a couple extra inches to overlap over your starting point and use a razor knife to cut across it. Pull the little excess strip and press the seam together. Let it sit overnight before you poke holes for feet, metal corners, or chassis screws. If you have any glue residue on the outside of the tolex when you're finished, you can clean it off with paint thinner.
