Supposedly his voice isn't there anymore. If you heard any of the clips of their current singer (who Perry gave props to and was an absolute class act to during his speech); he wasn't quite hitting things either :idk: People bag on Journey and I get it; but those songs are hard to sing. Schon, whilst being creepy from time to time; is no slouch either.

I saw Journey last summer at a big 4th of July stadium event. I posted here about it at the time and won't rehash all the details (available here), but the relevant point to this thread is that Arnel Pineda was great. He put his own spin on some of the vocals, and was much more of a "respectful interpreter" than "Steve Perry impressionist," but there were no moments where I thought he had changed a part just because he couldn't hit Steve's notes. All the songs were in studio key and he nailed everything. :idk:

Weird that he's fallen off in such a short time. Assuming he's still the Journey vocalist. I didn't watch the ceremony so if it's someone else, please ignore me.

I don't want to say he's fallen off and I am a big fan of the dude  I dug the documentary about his experience and he has a great voice. I think he was maybe having an off night :idk:

Of course; the clips on the next are from someone's cell phone. No production polish. He was in (generally) key it was just during some of those "oh sh!t Steve Perry has such an amazing voice" parts where he faltered a bit. Just a bad time to have a semi-off night I guess

Its too bad Deen Castronovo freaked out and Journey had to replace him on drums. I don't know if you ever heard him sing but he can sing the hell out of Steve Perry songs.

I saw them with Dean and Steve Augiere ( ). You are right on that. They could have toured with him on vox had they not needed a front man imo. Dude was good.

Yeah, cannot deny PJ's popularity, success, presence and influence and all, I just never liked them.

For some reason I thought they did do a tour with just him on vocals. Or at least played some shows with him doing the full set.

In any case, yeah, he's a great drummer and singer. That Revolution Saints band he had for a while was really good. Unfortunate he's such a huge shitbag of a person.

I'm a fan. Seen them twice and it was two of the best live music experiences of my life. Contrary to what some say, I felt like it was authentic and somewhat familial. They love their fans and their fans love them. Ten is obviously amazing, Vs. Is probably my favorite and I've always loved yield.

I am completely indifferent to them. I never bought any of their albums or made any conscious effort to listen to any of their music, but if a PJ song comes on the radio I won't change the station. It's one of the bands I don't love or hate.

Much respect to Pearl Jam.
I dislike 95% of their music.

:thu: What Ben said.

However I think whatshisname has opened the vocal market for nasally baritones, and for this boost in whiteguy credibility, I am truly grateful. I lurk in the shadows of those who came before me.

I thought Eddies voice sounded best on the tune "Plush" from like 1993 or so.

Everything else is kind of meh.

Pearl Jam for me will always be one of my all time favorite bands..... I will say I wasn't a massive fan of No Code, Yield... pretty much any album after Vitology UNTIL Backspacer was released, though those albums do have some choice singles I love on them. When Backspacer was released I felt it was as awesome as Vs or Vitology... shit transported me back to my teens..... Lighting Bolt was cool but not as strong as Backspacer.... them being in the R&R HOF is well deserved IMO

Love Pearl Jam, Mike McCready is one of my all time favorite guitar players. Eddie Vedder is the man, and I never understood how so many can dislike his voice.

Check out Pearl Jam 20 on Netflix, documentary that came out on their 20th anniversary.

I think it's mostly the people who tried to copy him (and failed miserably in most cases) that soured people on Vedder himself.

Please don't think I'm hating on Eddie, I'm only poking fun.

He does not have a great voice as we might compare to the Great Vocalists. But over two decades of working his ass off he has certainly mastered the ability to use his voice to do what he wants, and he has a great ear for expression. No knock on him as a musician that he wasn't born a mutant with pipes like Robert Plant. What he lacked in mutant form he made up for with devoted work.
