There's a secret to listening to Pantera....

Post by Anomaly »

A very flat EQ response on your stereo/player..... no scooping 1k or no scoopong anything for that matter, and no boosting anything either. It's meant to be listened on a stereo with a flat equalizer response to get the most out of the music and the drum, bass and guitar tone. With this knowledge you will realize that "Far Beyond Driven" is one of the top 5 best produced metal albums of all time, even by todays standards.

I know people whine about Dimes tone and Vinces clicky drum tone yet they are listening on a system that is EQ'd to shit. Idiots.... Had to get that out of my system.

Also you can't guage CFH's tone by the title track. They used a tequnique called the FRY, whioch was a big boost in the 10K region which sounded like frying bacon. That song was drenched in it, but the rest of the album had much much less of that effect. It has a great metal tone. Just listen to "Primal Concrete Sledge" right after "CFH" for an example of what I'm talking about.

An old friend Sterling Winfield mixed that album. Not sure I agree 100%, but it had that Pantera sound.

They were all very close friends, he was like another member of the band, he didn't really care about that. In the early days especially.

I never change my EQ unless it's one of my own recordings because they usually suck.

FBD is great. I love how it's not squashed and mastered to death and the mix is awesome but to say top 5 of all time is a long reach.

Guitars aren't as bad as some of the rep they got but I wouldn't say they were close to amazing.

I liked Dime, and his playing , but never a tone I would purposely go after,

VDP and FBD were two of my favorite albums to listen to on my Eclipse stereo system in my 94 Camaro which had a power amp for the car speakers and a separate amp for the bazooka tube.

Everything sounded amazing on that system. Especially Pantera.

This. Though its weird that a lot of the live vids have considerably better tone.

The biggest and most badass live rhythm tones I've heard to date were from Dimebag. I quit listening to their albums after FBD but I still would still go to Pantera concerts for that reason.

I gripe about Pantera, but I saw them on Vulgar tour in Chicago (which was absolutely INSANE) and then again on the tour where Morbid Angel opened (I think it was Trendkill, not for sure tbh). There were technical issues on that show but both shows were on point. At least instrumentally speaking. Phil was in his rambling junkie phase on that Trendkill show iirc.

Yeah too bad Phil is a total douche. I still think he has/had one of the best all time voices of metal.

When Cowboys from hell came out I was in high school. I remember shoulder tapping some dude in a parking lot to buy a 5th of Jack Daniels. One of the friends parents were out of town so we partied there.. got utterly shitfaced and put on Cowboys from hell on the stereo full blast and started moshing off the couches into each other. Eventually someone put their head through a wall. Next morning I found we smashed a few paintings, puked on the floor, and tore all the couch cushions to shreds.

So I can feel ya, full blast Pantera is how it should be played. Volume is the best equalizer.

That was a great time for metal. Pantera, Prong, COC's Blind, Sepultura. Bunch of great diverse bands :rawk:
