Haven't checked out the new album, but the other five, especially Midnight Marauders, were top-notch.

Legends. Low End Theory and People's Instinctive are both classics in all senses of the word.

I love tribe, but I gotta say whatever garbage they were playing on SNL was fucking awful. Really bummed me out :(

If they are out performing without the 5footer, than that's just a not right.

I like Low end theory. I mean, these were the years where MTV actually had specific shows for Metal and Rap in the early 90's. So, despite being a true cvlt leather jacket wearing, long hair metalhead during this time.lol. I watched Yo mtv raps during some late nights stoned out of my mind. I think that's when I found Check the rhime. I always thought about stealing that opening horn sample for a guitar riff!

Yep its a bit weird right? Not sure how I feel about it. I do know he worked on the last album before he died and even named it. I have skimmed through some of the album but haven't really given it a good listen yet.

A lot of good ones on low end theory, but this was a personal fave. The snare hits hard in the pocket. Great drum sound.

I love the jazz influence on that album. Apparently Guru noticed as well and started putting out the Jazzmatazz records which are pretty cool IMO.

I miss real hip hop.

You guys here this "rap" pop shit on the radio these days. Holy fuck they sound like they're rapping through a kazoo and it's like the requisite is having absolutely zero skills or style.

Yep. I mean there are a few cats out there but these days I rarely listen to hip hop. My wife got me into Anderson Paak recently. Have you checked this shit out yet Mike? I think you would dig it. Very west coast-ish, some of the beats remind me of Dj Quik.

Yeah that's pretty cool. I dig it, but not quite straight up hip hop.

And yeah don't get me wrong there are cats doing the rhyme game right but the kids. The kids growing up right now have absolutely no idea what rap skills actually are. I feel bad for them.

I'm actually working on a rap song with the second youngest boy right now. We was in da studio last night makin' beats, yo.

He was amazed watching the process of me laying a basic beat with a Slate hip hop kit and programming on the piano roll. Playing a bass line, correcting timing real quick, layering pads and all that. It was his first time paying attention to how easy it can be to make some cool music. He's writing his rhymes and then I'll help him rewrite or rephrase and teach him how to rap to the beat and we'll record him. It's about the playground.

Being a dad is awesome, usually.

My friends are crazy about them. I see the appeal, but I can't quite get into them.

Anderson Paak is pretty sweet, Malibu is a killer record. If we're talking recent hip-hop I've just started to dig into the new Aloe Blacc and DJ Exile project Emanon and it's pretty awesome. Definitely got a Mos Def-ish vibe going on. Worth a listen for sure.

I was never a big rap fan, but at least it used to have rhythm. The rap that I hear now has all of the rhythm of an epileptic seizure. It's become the musical equivalent of the Special Olympics. Even worse, when the music stops, half of them can't even formulate coherent sentences. Them someone will refer to them as a genius, at which point I have to excuse myself from the room and find the nearest garbage can to vomit into. The bar has been set so low.......

Yes. Of all the genres that have been pop washed and dumbed down rap has suffered the most. It's in a really sorry state. You can find real rap but not on the radio. The rap that's on the radio is pure garbage. Sad.

It's crazy that Paak was in this (my) thread and yet somehow I just recently got excited about his music as if I'd never seen it before.
