Melodic Hardcore band I mixed - Of Glaciers

Post by Nolly »

Hi guys,

Of Glaciers have posted up a single from their upcoming album "Heart Museum", which I mixed. It's not often I get to work on music I like as much as this, I feel like this band could be huge with the right team behind them!
The mix itself is pretty different from my usual, and I tried to keep the drums as natural as possible so there is really very little in the way of samples on the kit. The rest of the album is killer too, so definitely keep an eye out for it if you like this track:

Cheers!

Hehe, thanks man! I guess this subforum isn't particularly busy, and maybe people don't dig this kind of music

Wow, I'm not exactly a huge fan of this type of music, but that sounds incredible, I actually enjoyed it.

I really like the drum mix, nice job. Music is terrible though. :p

Any pointers on how you mixed the tom toms? I always seem to have problems with getting them to cut through clearly without resorting to samples.

Thanks guys, glad you dig the mix at least :)

Toms are both tricky and easy - if they're good drums, tuned well they should come across great on recording, but cymbal bleed can really limit your options for mixing. For this band I had to deal with a LOT of bleed, especially from the china into the floor tom, so ended up having to cut all spaces between tom parts, then pasting in clean hits from elsewhere in the song alot of the time to get around awkward amounts of cymbal popping through during/after fills. Once I'd done this the toms were easier to deal with, I used a transient designer to boost their attack a little, then compression and plate reverb to bring in some sustain. The EQ is pretty heavy too, cutting a lot of midrange, while boosting the low end and treble. For parts where the floor tom was being rolled on for a while, I automated down the amount of low end to prevent it getting too muddy.

Hey thanks, I'll need to try that transient designer trick.
