Official GAB Gardening Thread

Post by ovid9 »

There was a great thread on the board that shall not be named that helped me raise a WHOLE bunch of peppers last summer.

Since spring is on its way (and I should probably be planting my seeds indoors...like, SOON).

Anyway, this is the thread to chronicle your garden in pictures and word.

What are you guys planning on this year?

I'm going to be doing green peppers again, and I think I'm going to try some jalapeno or something. I'm also going to give butternut squash a try and I'm probably going to do a few green bean plants. This is going to require expanding my small garden a bit and getting more fence, but hey, last year was totally worth it. We're still using peppers from last summer in chili!

I garden all year. This winter has been ridiculous.

Jenny cans and pickles lots of stuff. Salsa, pasta sauce, pickles, carrots, cauliflower.

This summer we'll have my garden and work on Jennys dads garden which was her old one.

I love going to the back yard to get dinner. Hard work but rewarding.

What do you grow in the winter up north dude? Do you have a little greenhouse or does stuff grow outside?

Tomorrow its supposed to be not terrible out so I'm going to clean up my plot from last year. Wifey isn't too thrilled I left dead pepper plants lingering in the yard all winter.

I garden year round too. Cept it's not a hobby. Lol.

Actually, I get two months off. July and August. Today, had the tractor going and was out ripping furrows from about midnight to 4am. I got a shit ton of beehive boxes placed all around my fields to pollinate the spring crop. I'd be an idiot to go out there when the sun is out. The warmer it gets the more active (angry) they seem to get. Especially when loud, moving green tractors approach.

I'm beat to shit and about to take a nap. Then wake up and do it again at night.

I've successfully killed almost an entire herb garden a couple times here (by entire garden, I mean the single ~1 gallon planter I have . Stupid peppermint is a bad weed... chokes everything else out. Need to dump the soil from my last attempt and start fresh I think... basil, rosemary, maybe some birdseye peppers if I can get them to grow.

It's shaping up to be. But, you know how it (can) go(es). Couple poorly placed rains and... Fuuuuuu

However, my fiancé is starting the garden up. I'll have to ask her what's she's got up her sleeve. Right now she's got everything in seedling stage.

She starts everything out in plastic bags with a paper towel. Then transplants to mini cups (where they are now) and then transplants them outside.

I think this year I'm gonna haul the machinery over and make raised beds (google plasticulture). Be the most ridiculous garden ever.

That plasticulture thing is crazy! It would make it a super garden!

Its GORGEOUS out today (and supposed to snow 3-5 inches overnight, screw you Illinois) so I went out and cut some sod to almost double the size of my garden. Last year I had the pepper plants packed in a bit close so now they'll have more room and I'll still have room for some green beans, spinach and squash.

I'm going to try a couple of green bean bushes and pepper plants in buckets again this year just for more space. The peppers in buckets were mostly a success so I figure a couple of bean bushes would probably work too.

Tomorrow I'm going to plant the pepper seeds in the...starter trays, whatever as I should have done that a week or two ago. Oh well.

My butterfly garden I planted has gone better than expected...I took these on the weekend:

I also just planted a blueberry bush, Aloe plant, Honeysuckle, some shade flowers and they are all going strong.

I've created an oasis for myself in my back garden...I took these over the past few weeks:

Between the berry bush, my birdbath and bird feeder I get a lot of colorful characters back there.

I have a hell of a lot of bees and wasps in my back garden and only got stung once. I kicked a flower while walking and it had a wasp on it and he tagged me. Some of them are HUGE...Luckily there are not many yellowjackets..They are mostly mud dauber wasps are pretty mellow and don't defend their homes like yellowjackets.

The bee's in my garden though are like teddy bears...Never had any stings etc.

I'm doing a few hot peppers this year after just doing green peppers last year.

This reminds me I gotta get them in their little seed pots THIS WEEK or I'm not gonna get them in this year.

I'm attempting a garden for the first time this year. Since it's been pretty damned warm here for a while, my roommate and I started it a few weeks ago. So far, we've planted various types of bell peppers, jalapenos, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers. All of 'em are actually coming up cept the cucumbers. A few have peaked out, but not many.

Also planted some herbs, rosemary, oregano and basil, I think.

I don't know shit about gardening, but it's going well so far and has been pretty damned fun.

I am fairly certain that this is simply a thinly veiled marijuana growing thread.

Peppers? Probably pot.

Pumpkin? I assume it is some strong type of pot.

Herbs? Definitely pot.

I just bought my house last year and the backyard is still nothing but dirt and rocks. I could do raised beds but I probably won't get to doing it this year. If anything will do some tomatoes in pots.
What I'd like to do is get some fruit and citrus trees in now. Want to do orange, lime, lemon, fig, peach, plum and grapefruit.
