OT: Needing a change of scenery, where to go?

Post by Nateispro »

So I used to lurk quite a bit on HCAF but did post once in a while.. anyways i'm hoping to post a lot more here. That being said i need some advice guys, I've lived in this crappy town in southern utah since i was 4. We have one open mic night a week at one venue and that's it, no shows, no places to play..I want to play gigs SO bad, but i can't decide where to go. I'm torn between Austin, Seattle, And L.A. I'm leaning towards L.A simply because my best friend lives there and would be able to help me out a lot and show me around... but still, it's L.A and i'm a green horn when it comes to city life.... i don't want to get my ass killed in a week. What do you guys say?

I really enjoyed Austin, but having a friend already living in a city is a huge plus. It boils down to what you're looking for. Look for the pros and cons of each city

That's my thought but it's so hard since i've never really been to any of them...plus my friends father is a guitar player as well who plays out quite often, and for what it's worth if i went to L.A i'd probably be staying with my friend and her family in reseda....

Since you grew up there you'd be able to tell me, what's the crime rate like in reseda? I mean compared to the rest of the valley? I know its problem in any big city but I don't want to be stuck in a area where my shits getting stolen weekly

Her name tell us por favor ! L.A. is spread out , big city but not really a big city feeling , like Manhattan towering over you . You can find trouble sure but that's anywhere these days . I recommend the West side if just for the weather alone , it runs cooler over here .

don't leave shit out unattended, don't leave your car unlocked. crime isn't too bad in the valley. gangbangers shoot each other at night, but mostly in pacoima, or van nuys, or the rougher parts of canoga park. but reseda, northridge, and chatsworth are pretty decent. i heard canoga park has been getting better too. mostly the west valley is the place to be.

when you head east and get into burbank/glendale, you have to watch out for the armenians lol.

north east is hispanic.

pretty much this is all you need to know lol (clipped from teh san fernando valley memes facebook page.)

That's pretty accurate. The only thing wrong with it is Panorama City. It's practically Tijuana there.

so it doesn't sound too bad for the most part... i mean as long as you aren't fucking around after dark and don't run your mouth at people and watch your back then you're fine right? Thanks for all the help guys, My town has 50,000 people but they're all LDS so there is like no crime here, and it feels like a small country town still, So the thought of me in a city like L.A is really exciting/ nerve racking at the same time!

I am pretty happy where I am. One thing i would consider, for anyone who is moving, is the impending water crisis this country will face in the near future. Places like Texas, or other arid areas where people live are going to become drier and drier. Just read about this last week on CNN.com I believe.

Living up here in Minneapolis, we have a great water supply, tons of lakes, and have the great lakes very close.

I definitely feel ya on the small town blues. I still live where I grew up, and while it's not exactly small (population of this area is 1.6 million people), it really is just not a vibrant place to live. Virginia Beach is decent, but still not what I'm looking for. The rest of the area (Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth) are inundated with poverty and crime. You literally cannot get away from it in this area. Regardless of what neighborhood you're in, the ghetto is a few blocks away and nowhere is considered a "safe" area.

My girlfriend and I are talking about moving to the west coast (San Fran or LA) in around 2 years. That gives me time to grow my business and for us to figure out our marriage plans. After that, we're out. I can run the business from anywhere.
