Another Firefly

Post by 1Tube34Karrraang »

Hey all,
I'm new here, I built said amp a few weeks ago, this was my first adventure in tube circuits, I am an electronics technician for 24 years.
I've built numerous electronic gadgets guitar amps, pedals, speaker cabs, remote wireless switches,
I even built a guitar pickup winder from scratch.
I stumbled across the firefly by Doug Hammond, and decided to give it a go.
Man was I ever more impressed when I flipped the switches and put pick to strings and the KARRRAANG that came out of my 4/12 stack was absolutely rewarding. After setting my Axe down and doing the cabbage patch and a saturday night fever dance around the room I was over whelmed with joy and excitement of I just built a tube guitar amp, thanks Doug, and AX84
What do you think?

Kinda off subject but here is the pickup winder and a small 1 watt solid state amp I built.

When ever someone posts a build thread, I want to dump my G/F, my mother and move back to my bachelor apartment! :)

I dig the glow in the dark schematic. :thu:
I was looking into doing a similar build some time ago. That's the 1 watter that uses a 12AU7 for a power tube right? Have you tried a 12BH7 in yours yet? Looking forward to hearing clips. :snax:

Thanks man,
this is my first tube amp.
That's actually neon that shows up under a black light in my music room,
I put the schematic on top to pay homage to Doug Hammond, if you look close at it you can see his name there,
Yea that is the 12AU7 it is from a 1959 RCA signal generator, but I am going to install a dual bias switch so I can run a 12BH7,or a ECC99.

I finally installed the MPS OT5PP+ and finished my cab.
the cab has a G12M Green Back on the bottom, and a G10N-40 on the top.
The two speakers are separated on the inside.
This setup friggin ROCKS!!

I don't want to seem like I'm bragging or anything,
Uh wait a minute that's what we do when we build something right.
Honestly my friends don't really get why I build my gadgets, (why do you do all that stuff cant you just
buy all that stuff in the stores?)
Only you guys here understand why we build these things.
So a little more braggin'

That all looks fun as hell.

Is it weird that the thing I'm most curious about is the pickup winder?

Well, for the pickup winder I seen one in Stew-Macs catalog and decided to build one,
The hardest part was making the plates that hold the pups. I can go from slow to roughly
1300 rpms, I can get more rpms if I change the pulleys, but that tends to get a little out of control for consistent winds. The power supply is an 250 watt ATX power supply, it feeds +12v dc to the motor
and the counter display, and feeds +5v dc to the IR sensor.
