Mic Shootout - Bluebird/AT4040 (not my vid)

For the hell of it I searched for clips of the Blue Microphones Bluebird for recording guitars and found this guy. I had only used my Bluebird for vocals but think I may give it a go for mixing with the SM57.

Me too. So we can safely say that...

In isolation (no mix to have to fit into) The Bluebird beat the 4040 on that day, in that guy's room, in front of that guy's cab, with the placement chosen by that guy, with settings chosen by that guy, and a guitar owned by that guy playing riffs chosen by that guy.

So what have we learned that we can apply to our own situation?

Different microphones can sound different.

I know I'm being a cunt here  , I just don't think this kind of shootout video really tells you anything more than that if you look at all the variables. I mean, just a hypothetical here, maybe in the room his tone sounded like white noise coming from the Sun riding on the back of laser-guided icepicks and the only mic in the world that could tame it was the ultimately shitty muted dull Bluebird. We weren't there, we don't know!

Given the choice, I'd have both and I'd use one or the other depending on what sounded best to me that day. (I've used both mics, they're both perfectly good mics)

Having owned a blue ball and an 8 ball, both made in Latvia, I'm done with blue mics. Plus, one of the expensive condensers was a problem mic on that super group show on vh1. Not a huge blue fan here. Can't watch the vid right now though.

Yeah Cirrus but only a little cunty!!! LOL!

Only posted the vid as I never thought to use my Bluebird for electric guitars so I was glad to see that I wasn't nuts. My mic knowledge is slim to none. Hell I like the e609 so what's that tell you!

Also the still pic on the vid makes me think this guy might be a closet "hand shaker"...
