So basically you are repeating what every Marshall owner has had to deal with for the last what 60 years? LOL!
I solved that problem by getting a Voodoo modded JMP 2203, 1978 vintage. Sounds glorious at any volume level, loop, more tone shaping controls, more gain, etc.
High-larious
I imagine I am gonna take so much flack for this...

LMAO, I think you nailed it, mang! Srsly... I started playing guitar in high school ~ mid/late '80s for me. Peavey Bandit SS. Not the later Transtube stuff. SS crap. Back then, every musician I knew was like "Peavey ~ when you can't afford the very best!"

Point being, I knew less than nothing about amplification ... I didn't have any clue why guitars even had volume knobs ~ it didn't make any difference to my Bandit where I dialed my guitar's volume. So over the past few decades, I've had to go back and reinvent many wheels, as it were.
Sad but true...

I too, have done the C12 mod to my DSL and it makes it a MUCH better red lead for me... It is darker sounding which "I" dig.
And the 100 watt DSL of mine sounds VERY good at lower volumes... While remaining a GREAT sounding amp with the volumes
all yanked up!... The amp simply screams,( like many of us) to be yanked!
