Yup. Not cool.

I hate it. I had to lay several men off this past month, due to the industry Im in being slow.

when i moved from socal to nashville i worked for the same company just switched from w2 to 1099. it went ok for a bit then they got a new manager who had control issues. basically 5 months into a brand new contract they wanted me to sign a new one where i would make less money.

i gave her a giant fuck you and pulled my biggest clients away from them.

it sucked man. i was broke as fuck. its stressful and killed the relationship i was in bc i felt like a broke suckbag and that is not who i normally am. but i wasnt going to tell them i would sign a new contract whenever and work for peanuts. i worked 2 shitty jobs for a while before i found my current job.

mojo sent, hope it all works out for the best.

Yes, also the fact I could have been laid off again is a big reason why I am in Japan. I was working at UBS who are laying off 40,000 staff

Sucks - happens too much in this economy. Having concerns of my own, given I'm working for a public agency that could be hit hard by the upcoming Sequestration / fiscal cliff redux coming up in the next month. Best of luck to us all.

I've been laid off twice, but both times it worked out WAY better than I could have hoped for.

First time, I was re-hired by the same company within 6 weeks, same job, same pay, different group. That round taught me to stay positive. I had gotten really down, and after getting re-hired and feeling better, I realized that when you're trying to market yourself, you've GOT to be positive. Be confident (and honest) un your skillset and get out there and get another job!

The second time, I was much better prepared, did a proper job of calling in favors for interviews, and managed to land my current job, which is amazing for my industry. It also ended up being a pretty well paid summer vacation, which I really needed.

So my message is, don't get stressed about it until it happens. When it does happen, start calling all your friends (and acquaintances) at various companies until you get the interview, then go kill the interview and get the job. In the mean time, just keep being good at your job and try to make yourself hard to get rid of!

Sort of, I guess. I was working up at another branch around 08', they couldn't afford to keep my position there, but fortunately my company had just fired some one's position in another branch down south, and needed someone there so I was asked if I could transfer and did. I don't know if that counts though. I dodged the bullet big time on that one.

Yup it sucked.

It eventually helped lead to my current career path which, while not exactly what I envisioned at least has kept me steadily employed for almost 8 years now.

Last time I got laid off was from the Home Depot. I was 22 and frankly a mediocre employee at best, and since they had to reduce their workforce after a bad quarter, I guess it was neater and cleaner to lay me off than to build a paper trail to fire me for cause. Luckily I was single, childless and had nobody to worry about but myself at the moment.

These days I'm a knowledgeable dude and a hard worker, which is good because if I got laid off tomorrow I'd be fucked with a backwards porcupine.

Also, Austin is "exploding" with jobs right now, surely you'll have a high paying job in the economic paradise of Texas soon enough.

Yeah, in 2004. It sucked. I did contract work for the company that laid me off, and while I never got behind on the mortgage I did rack up a bunch of debt to keep the family fed and clothed. Didn't help that we had to have about $12k in plumbing work done while it was going on. They rehired me 9 months later. i negotiated a $6k raise when they did, which didn't begin to get us out of the hole.

How old are you? If you're in your 50s or older it might take years to get rehired in this economy.

Tea partier talking about selfishness? The guys who want to cut out social services that help people when they've been laid off, mostly it seems to reduce the amount that is coming out of their pocket in taxes? Pot, meet kettle.

FWIW, no one who is a good worker and wants to work "deserves" to be unable to make a living for an extended period of time, whether it's because they are the wrong age, sex, shape or color.

Was aid off by Amazon a year ago. Now I'm working for another company that only wants the bare minimum it can give you, with lay offs potentially right around the corner. Can't win.

Um...which is more selfish:
A. Keeping the money that I earn, myself.
B. Demanding that you have a right to the confiscate the money that I earned. (Hint: this is the shit that has been instiutionalized by the baby boomers)

FWIW, no one deserves anything.

Shit happens, and then you get back up and get back on the horse.

Truth of the matter is that it is easier to stay on the dole playing your xbox than it is to get out and find a fucking job or move to some place where there is work. I have been laid off before and it blows. But in a time where people have barely kept their jobs and are in constant fear of losing said jobs, I have been shooting straight to the top. Why? Me and my drive. Not Uncle Sam.

So fuck you and your populist bullshit.
