Mesa recto straight cab muddy?

Post by drkorey »

I just got one of these on clearance over the internet and it's my first boogie cab. I am finding it to be WAY low in the deep end and muffled. I find I have to max my Peters Chimera and Splawn QR treb and prescence just to start to cut through and it seems it sucks a lot of my disortion out compared to my buzzbomb 2x12 w/ Scholz speakers. Happen to anyone else? Any remedies?

Have you checked the actual speakers?

And can you tell us your amp settings please?

I find that odd, having owned a couple. They're deep, but never muffled.

It should have V30's??
That doesn't sound like V30's to me.

Yeah, to add to the growing chorus here, I'd say you might want to check 1) that it's really V30s; and 2) that they're wired properly. A Mesa Recto cab should have four 8 ohm V30s wired in series-parallel, for 8 ohms total.

Clearance cabs are often returns - could be the old buy it - swap speakers - return it ploy.
Best of luck whatever the problem is.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a recto cab at all. You should have no issues with it being able to cut. Might be a lemon...

Recto cabs (all of them) sound deep, big and 3D, but not muffled. Maybe you're used to the speakers in the other cab and they may have some shrill qualities.

All possibilites, I'll have to pull the back off and check it. I can post some amp settings tomorrow - but damn a QR needing to have the treb and pres dimed is unheard of, and that is what I'm doing. I've got a neighbor w/ a mesa 2x12 I can check and I just formed a band with another guitarist that has a slant 4x12 and I'll run the amps through his and see how it sounds, they won't be 100% comparisons but it will give me an idea. It's definitely missing the 3D and non muffled dept.

There's a dead hooker stuffed in your cab. Calling it now. Take her out and your treble response will return. Also, if she has a purse or a little clutch or something, check it before you throw her in the dumpster. Prolly got some coke or meth on her.

What kind of volume are you pushing?

I've always found them to be slightly muffled sounding until you open the amp up a bit, then the cab should really air out. I've owned 2 of the straight/slant 4x12 rectos, and they both acted this way.
