Too much gain = no dynamics and just a mush of sound
No such thing as too much Financial Gain though

When playing high gainish stuff, I tend to start with the gain a bit low and just turn it up until whatever I'm playing sounds right. I like the pick attack to be obvious and I like to be able to clean it up a little with my right hand.
