Speaker Setup Question

Post by simeonk64g »

Two questions
So i have an Egnater Tweaker plugged into a 16 ohm celestion vintage 30 (sounds great). I bought a cheap cab and speaker to add on to my rig the new speaker is an eminence 16 ohm.
1) So basically my resistance now is 8 ohms, right?
2) I want to be able to turn off and on the second speaker during the middle of songs and what not. How would i do this without damaging my amp or speakers? I was thinking that i could possibly hook up a foot switch that would kill the second speaker, but my resistance coming from the amp would be 8 ohms into a 16 ohm speaker. Would this be harmful?
Thanks guys, any advice is appreciated!

1) yup, the impedance of 2 16ohm speakers in parallel is 8 ohms
2) don't do this. there isn't any real practical (or cheap) way of doing this and there isn't any real gain from doing so.

just curious... why would you want to turn a speaker off?

I saw someone do it live and it was really awsome.

I don't get it either.
What kind of effect did it have turning it on and off?

Well he had two huge stacks of amps and he had one on at all times, but he turned the other one on when hr wanted extra ummph for a solo or something.

aaah - that is different then - he was turning on and off the whole stack then.
His imepdance for any one amp wasn't changing - just switching out the whole thing.
You wouldn't get the same effect by only switching one speaker on and off (and not an amp with it)
even if it was possible to do it safely/easily.

I totally get using speakers and cabinet switching to achieve tone changing results. My "dream rig" is one where I can switch between 3 different speaker cabinets. But until I'm playing out in stadiums with a full road crew and whatnot... I'll pass.

There's wiser ways to do this but in a 2x12 configuration you're better off just running it as is and using a pedal for the ooomph you're thinking of. Seriously.

Hey no worries man. Hang around and feel free to ask any other question you might have about different ways to run your rig. Even theoretical questions like this are welcome. Don't feel "shot down" :thu:

You can get extra whatever you want with an EQ in the loop of your amp.

If that was the purpose of doing this then I'd just snag an MXR 10 band and call it a day.
Guitars:
ESP Eclipse, JR Tele, Gibson LP Tribute, Gibson Government Explorer S I/II, Yamaha FGX830C, Balaguer Goliath, Squire Jazz Bass
Maps:
Egnater Armageddon, 5153 50W Stealth, Quilter, Ashdown RM500
Cabs:
Bogner 4x12, Bogner OS 2x12, Randall MTS 2x12, Eden D410XLT

Would I put the eq in the effects loop or in the front with the rest of my pedals?

EQ in the loop is in my opinion the best way to do it. IF you don't have a loop then out front will work but it's different. It's more of a boost pedal like that, vs. a tone shaping tool.

I have relatively neutral voiced speakers so putting the MXR 10 band EQ in the loop is VERY effective at giving ooomph much like running a different speaker would. I can shape and tweak my tone quite a bit like that.

Since we're talking about speakers in cabs. I have an empty cab that came without screws. What is the standard size for speaker mounting screws?

Are you up to your custom speaker cabinet shenanigans again Ryan?
