Listening to Pantera's "glam" albums for the 1st time

...and it's not bad at all. Not really glam either, more like Judas Priest/Accept type of vibe for the most part. .

Some killer playing by Dime (errr Diamond) in these album. And Phil can do the Halford/Tate thing really well too. Dude had an impressive vocal range for going from this early stuff to the later heavier shit. It's like the guy could sing it all.

I haven't heard the stuff with the previous singer yet, that's coming up next.

I need to check it out. I'm not really a Pantera fan. Mainly because of Anselmos vocals. But Dime is fucking awesome. This may be more up my alley.

Wow, i grew up a huge Pantera fan but somehow wasn't aware of these! Just skimmed it a bit... very interesting. But those album cover band pics... those are amazing!

You can definitely see how some of this lived on in Cowboys From Hell.

These deserve a remastering....

I have a double disc set of those two albums. There was one tune in there that was blantantly a rip of Cinderella, or so I thought until I compared dates on them.

It's honestly some pretty good music when you're in the mood for such things.

Absolutely, and I am really impressed with Phil's singing. I knew he could hit real high notes (Cemetery Gates etc..) but this is amazing. He's was good as Halford in that style and to go from there to the super low shit he does now.... damn that's a ridiculous range for a singer.

Just realized the two albums I have preceeded the Phil era by a few years. Terry Glaze/Terrence Lee (same dude, changed names for stage) was the singer at the time. And those albums were VERY glam. I mean REALLY glam. Power Metal was their first attempt to heavy things up. The albums I have are called, "Projects in the Jungle" and "I Am The Night." Power Metal (Phil's first if I recall right) was their attempt to heavy things up before hitting their stride with Cowboys.

Still pretty damn awesome music though. You can sense their is something special brewing there in a way you don't normally hear in glam bands of the era.

Listening to the Power Metal solos I think it's awesome that Dime always had that dark blues chromatic way of shredding

Ya, they were good at the hair metal stuff too. Actually, i find they were more like a Priest influenced band, and it was just their fashion sense that was really glam. All those early albums except one of the early albums (metal magic or projects in the jungle, was marshall i think?) were recorded with the old Randall's too, so those amps can cop a pretty good traditional marshally tone as well as the more brutal tones of CFH and later with some EQ tweaking...

It's pretty amazing how young he was when he recorded those early albums. He developed those skills very quickly. Rex says that when Blizzard Of Ozz came out he (Dime) just sat in his room practicing for literally just one summer and that was it... he was a virtuoso. Didn't take long at all.

There was still a fair bit of cheese on that album, but damn, overall, you can totally see how they made CFA next.

And Dime, good god, the man could play.

yep, that's what impressed me the most. Dime is a badass and I already knew that and it's easy for a player of his level to switch styles effortlessly. But goddamn for a singer to have a vocal range THAT wide, that was seriously impressive.

I knew this was a thing but never listened.
Definitely not a fan but impressed with Phil as well.

Not a fan of those style vocals so I could be totally off but I feel like the later stuff fit his voice better.
Either way I agree I'm not surprised Dime Bag could do it all, dude was such a beast.

People who claim they're overrated and use the glam era stuff as a knock against them are just plain silly.

I actually gave Power Metal a listen a few days ago. Definitely Priest inspired.

I've heard a few tracks here and there from the ''glam'' period. I guess back then, it was what most metal bands were doing at the time. But motherfucker, Dime could play. He was incredibly gifted.
