Work your way back, Mike. The previous cd is the Hunter is pretty accessible as is Crack the Skye. The one before that Blood Mountain might be a little too heavy for your tastes. I dig from Leviathan through now for different reasons. I have listened to remission a few times but never got into it.

I am 42. I came up in an era where everyone had great vocals. Lots of extreme metal has used processed vocals as well. Not a dealbreaker as long as they are actually doing the singing.

Um yeah... cause when I listen to the track on the album there's definitely processing.
Although I will agree that it wasn't necessarily bad on that live video. The mix sounded off, but I can hear where a little processing would help.

Agreed, Crack the Skye is the album that broke them into a more mainstream audience and it's a fantastic album. It still has grit but the singing parts are excellent and different than the new album. I personally think parts almost sound Alice In Chains-ish... maybe that's just me. But that album... man, that's a killer album. Hunter definitely has its moments. The new album is easily the most accessible and has them going further in the direction they've been headed for these last 3 albums.
I personally love their pre-Crack The Skye sound too but definitely takes a different taste.

I don't know guys, saw them play last night in Austin and the singing was pretty spot on IMO. Even the clean singing from the drummer sounded great. Doesn't hurt that Stubbs is an awesome venue with great sound... sure that played a part but man.... they killed it. I've seen them twice before and this was by far my favorite. Old stuff, mixed with the new stuff adds a lot of variety to the show. One of the best metal shows i've seen in a long time.

I saw them at Emo's back in the day when Leviathan had just come out and they were spectacular. Last few times hasn't been nearly as intense for some reason.

Venue and also where in the crowd you are plays a big part in that i think.
We found our way up about 7 or 8 people away from the stage slightly to the left. Then a huge pit opened up and we were right on the edge of it. The crowd participation and action in that area really intensified the show. If we were 20 people further back it would have been tight fit, people folding their arms and bobbing their head back and forth. Or in the way back where everyone is talking and the sound isn't nearly as good... obviously.

Was Gojira and Kvelertak on the bill as well? How was Kvelertak live? They seem like they would kill in a live setting.

Also, I love how those three bands seem to be on a never ending tour together now

I am old and live in BFE so I am constantly over missed shows as they are always 250 miles away

Forget vocal processing, they need a frontman who can actually focus on singing. I always feel like bands with drummer-frontmen are awkward live. Theres just no way around it. If they really cared, they would hire a touring drummer and let the singer do what he needs to do.

^ exactly. I think one of the strong points of the band is that they have 3 singers all with distinct sounds which can make the songs varied and interesting. I love that about them.
Kvelertak was pretty good. The owl mask was the best part, ha. All the songs sounded similar... maybe that's because i haven't listened to them except for a handful of times. They were fun.
Gojira was ok. Not really my thing but i could appreciate it.

Super boring. I used to like Mastadon, then I saw them live. I literally almost fell asleep I was so bored. Didn't help that Gojira played before them and absolutely blew them out of the water.
I've never seen Mastodon live, but I've got to say, Gojira would blow just about anyone out of the water live. Those guys are just on another level.
