delaying speakers how large does the room have to be

Post by Mukuzi »

Hi,
quick question about speaker delay.

If i`m running P.C audio and a microphone into a smal system with two speakers above the microphone and a cluster of cieling speakers roughly 20 meters away (about 60 foot)
the room is max 30 meters long 15 meters wide.
its a small room that will seat about 70 people.
will i need to delay the cieling cluster or do i delay the main two speakers at the front of the room.

I don't think you have to worry about it in a room that size - but if you did, the delay would be on the speakers away from the stage, and would be .05 seconds. Speed of sound at sea level in dry air is 1,126 feet per second
60 feet/1,126feet/sec=.0532859 seconds

yes i agree a client has asked me to delay the cieling speakers. i dont get why she thinks it needs to be done. cieling speakers point down toward the floor, the two at the front of the room point toward the back of the room. wouldnt delaying the speakers cause phase alighnment issues at the wave front?

I wouldn't worry about that. Four speakers (I assume) means there will be no phase alignment in mot of the room anyway. That won't be a problem; it's splitting hairs. The client has obviously read about delaying satellite speakers and is fixated on that as an important thing. Do it, make her happy and proceed as normal.
