As far as the overdrive I think it sounds mediocre at best. It seems to have a solid state tone to it like a bad distortion pedal In front. I am a bogner fan but would pass on this one.

The JVM is more versatile, but the Splawn Nitro I had, made the JVM feel like a toy. The Splawn is just so much more powerful and open sounding than the JVM. My modded JVM with the Negative feedback, and choke mods however was a different story. It was still not as big sounding, but it could hang with the Nitro pretty good.
Good deals: Guitar Billy, Crunchtime, Draco Aron, Holy War, Crank, Yo Squig, Moops, Elemenope, Edge of Darkness, Abstract, Chris JD, Ricky Rockhardo, Norton 666, Freehandarson, Dolf, Van_Muddlestein, Yarbicus, Schweezly, Nateispro, Conky, MikeO, Whiskey Face, Broslinger, Mamberg, Ajaxlepenski, Ovid 9, SAH5150, Axe, Greatmutah, Rubyguitargod, Hardvalve, JerEvil, Jive Turkey

I prefer the QR over the Nitro, I just like the toan .

the QR is my fav splawn, I love marshalls but never owned one that I loved as much as the QR.
The QR is in my list of top 3 amps.

In your experience, what is the main difference between the QR tone and the Marshall tone?

Re: Splawn: A better Marshall?
Have a QR and 2 Nitros.
The Nitro sounds like no Marshall I have ever played. Great amp....been gigging them since 2008. Eats my dual rec alive....well...did... I sold both my Drs.
And the 5150 sounds like a tou next to a Splawn. Splawns own a mix.
QR is a Marshall flavor but has its own thing going on.
And the jesus stuff. Turns me off. Hate that stuff but Scott never has oncesaid anything remotely religious to me. What you get is top notch customer service. Through the religion concerns out the window. I have three Splawns and only know they have something written inside bc my tech told me so.
Who cares.
Splawns are great amps. Newer ones are even better imo.. I lve the tones I get. They have their own thing goingon.

Re: Splawn: A better Marshall?
Basically a much more pronounced and percussive high-mid spike, and an extremely tight low end. Its one of those things that just kinda hits you in the chest, you really "feel" this amp. Theres an aggressive snarl in it that is all its own, the signature "Splawn" tone. As for "presence" on the stage and in the mix, it is nearly impossible to "hide" in the mix with this amp, it has soo much presence and knock, it cuts through every mix like a lightsaber.

Thanks for this.
Finally someone who can describe the Splawn OR tone in detail.

Mids are different than a Marshall or boosted Marshall (just imo) which is sort of what I was hoping for when I owned one. They do sit well in a mix though.

Re: Splawn: A better Marshall?
Basically you just have to play one to really understand what the differences are, they are hard to describe tonally other than what I have already said. They are rather unforgiving, as every note has so much presence, it just stand right out there for all to hear, so wrong notes are loud and proud as well. It is not an amp for everyone, but if that kind of tone and presence is what you seek, there is not another amp out there even remotely close to it, in its price range. My guitar player has been through the ringer with amps, everything you can imagine. And he is right back with his 2008 QR.

Re: Splawn: A better Marshall?
Yeah, and as far as Scott being a Christian, NONE of it is in your face. That is just how he conducts his business. That manifests itself in the way he deals with people and stands behind his product however. If you have a problem, or even a question, you can call Splawn and speak directly with Scott at any time. He is patient, and thorough, and knows what he is talking about. Would have been interesting to see if you were able to call up Marshall and try to speak with Jim???? Customer service is absolutely second to none with Splawn, I would challenge you to find another amp company with service even remotely close to theirs.

Here is a pretty decent clip of a nice "dry" Quick Rod tone, a pretty good representation of what it sounds like with nothing but a guitar and a cord in between.
