Having never played a Splawn, but having owned several Marshalls...there is nothing like a Marshall. Most anything claiming to be a hotrodded Marshall is simply using the Marshall platform for their own tone stack. When it comes down to it, there are 4 major amp types and then variants built off of them.
    Fender
    Marshall
    Vox
    Dr. Z

In my opinion, those are the four tastes available to guitarists and all else are modifications of those designs.

I love my DSL 50 and have it dialed in really good.

Just I have some cash coming my way and seeing if there is something out there better than the DSL for 2k or less.

I suppose lots of his stuff starts with other amps. I guess I was thinking of the Ghia as a completely original design.

Yeah, I agree with 63 Strat. Dr Z makes great amps but they're all his take on various Marshalls, fenders and voxes.

The Ghia is his 18 watt Marshall clone :thu:

Yeah don't get me wrong, Dr. Z's are def great amps, but not original at all in the sense to be included in those other 3 IMO.

I don't agree about Dr Z.

To me there are 5 basic tube amp types:

Marshall
Fender
Vox
Mesa (as in Mark)
Soldano (as in SLO).

They all share some things in common, even because there are only so many ways you can make a guitar amp. But for me, these 5 are the blueprints all other designs are based off of.

I'd say Mesa and Soldano are Marshall flavors, so really all you're left with is Marshall, Fender, Vox.

I have to disagree about Mesa being a Marshall flavored amp. Randall Smith cut his teeth modifying Fender amplifiers and the Mark series was developed to further those modified designs.

They still lean more towards the Marshall end of things than Fender though, no matter what they started out as.

The Nitro I had sounded allot bigger than my JVM and was a good bit tighter amp. They do have a Marshall type flavor, but I honestly prefer a good old fashion cranked Marshall better, but the Splawns are built way better. I prefer classic gain tones now more so maybe that is why I prefer the Marshall's :idk:

Just curious ... But why isn't peavey not in the discussion, were they original designs? Splawn seems to me to take a similar approach

Isn't Splawn the company that puts religious crap inside their amps?

That's enough to keep me from buying from them even if it was God's own amp (see what I did there?) and they charged a dollar. Fucking Xtians need to keep thier shit to themselves and out of my fucking face.

I've never played a QR IRL but from all of the clips I've hear of them, they sound pretty gat damned Marshall-y to my ears :idk:

So I take it from this thread that they don't sound anything like a hot-rodded Marshall then?

I like the Marshall voiced sound.
Is the Splawn simply a Better Marshall, or just different?

Even though Splawn is heavily Marshall derived, it's still a Splawn voicing that strays away from the Marshall tone.

Which you may or may not like...imo.
