Tell me about San Francisco

Post by iff »

I'm planning on applying for a computer engineering internship with a company in San Francisco, which would be a 16 month position. I don't know much about the place besides:
- hills
- smog
- gay people
- warmer than Canada
- across the bay from Oakland, which apparently sucks

So tell me about it!

smog? in frisco? since when?

other than that, your list is accurate. please don't judge my entire country based on your experiences in kalifornia...i often refer to that state as our national cereal bowl: full of fruits, nuts, & flakes. :o

Expensive, good food, decent beer, public transportation is pretty good. Yeah half the guys in the city are gay, that just means that you effectively have a 2:1 ratio of women to straight men, though to be honest there's a good number of lesbians, too. The baseball park is pretty good, though a little too cutesy for my tastes.

There's a few nice parks, winter weather is in many ways nicer than summer weather, which can go from 50F to 70F and back down to a 45F that feels colder than that in an hour or two.

Put me down as liking Oakland. I only lived there a month but it was fine. Berkeley is nice too, just a bit too granola. San Francisco is ridiculous beautiful but like they said, very expensive. Good city if you like burritos and fish tacos. The public transit system is good too.

Thanks. I've heard the weather's pretty odd. Definitely something I'd have to get used to.

It's a bit hard for me to judge the city's cost from apartment/room ads on CL, but when you guys say it's expensive - is that objectively expensive or just expensive compared to the rest of the US? I mean, coming from Canada, it may just be a smooth transition cost wise...

It's one of the more expensive areas in the country to live.

Definitely plan on it. No plans on getting a car regardless of where I go though.
