Just how light are the chambered Les Pauls?

Post by Diddlybo »

I'm considering getting a lighter Les Paul...because I'm old dammit...and I have a line on a Standard that weighs in at 7.5 lbs. Is that pretty much the normal weight for a chambered Paul, give or take a few ounces, or could I find lighter? Anybody have any knowledge of whats on the low end of the weight scale for Les Pauls?

Also, the owner described the neck profile as a "modern contour". Never heard of a Gibson neck profile called a modern contour. WTF is that?

I don't get it. You are planning on trying to get a lighter Les Paul but you're looking at a Standard that is probably 7.5 pounds and your Studio is 7 pounds. I don't find either to be heavy though by the way. The only LP I can think of that would be lighter is the Swamp Ash one.

Modern neck contour is what they did on all the LP Standards from 2008-2012. The top edge (bass side) of the neck starts out round and flattens out as it curves to the treble side. I don't like it.

They got rid of it and all the 2013 LPs have a 60s style neck now.

I don't have a studio. That's Fretless with the 7 lb Studio.

Do you find the Studio to be neck heavy or is it still pretty well balanced?

Wow, thanks. That seems like it would be weird feeling. Is it a chunky neck or slim?

Too light for me. I had a 60s' tribute for about 14 minutes. Pulled it out of the box and knew immediately I wasn't going to keep it. It felt like a cheap toy. It did sound great. But, for me, a Les Paul needs to have mass to it. Otherwise, like the Tribute, it feels neck heavy.

Of course, I have a maple body Strat that is easily a pound or two heavier than my '91 Studio. So, I guess I like them heavy.

But not fat.

The Precision kit is chambered too but weighs about 8 lbs.
