Yarp. I'm getting a set. I have two friends who are utter gear maniacs. We are talking probably a million spent on gear between them over the years. And they said SED's are the best current production tube out there.

A good player can make any amp sound good, LesPaul-Marshall. So maybe instead of wasting your money on expensive tubes, confederate flag bandanas and reebok pumps, you should consider lessons?

SED's don't sound any better to me than JJ's or any other tube that costs less than half the price to my ears. I put them in one of my Marshalls and immediately felt stupid for having spent double what I could've gotten JJs for. Just my opinion of course

It depends on how your amp is biased too. I had 17 year old stock peavey 6L6's in my 5150 and was so excited to put in a quartet of new TAD 6l6's and literally heard little to no difference. I then replaced all of my preamp tubes and was able to tell a difference but not huge. If you're running a marshall or something really hot I'm going to assume power tube choice can change your tone to a bigger degree.

I've heard a difference between brands, and I think SEDs sound better than JJs. :idk:

JJ is yet to fail me, so until that day comes, all the other tube companies can suck it :)

I used to buy SED =C= EL34s and 6L6s years ago because everyone on the forum hyped them up. Then one day I actually decided to use my own ears and compare them. They aren't that good. They aren't really even good at all IMO. JJ's kill them. SED tubes sound hard and brash in the midrange and never really give you that feel that you can dig in and they react. One of the most overhyped brands out there IMO.

That's likely because the 5150s have a fixed, cold bias IIRC. I do think preamp tubes would make more of a difference in power amp tubes for that particular amp, though. I noticed the same when I had my 5150. Granted I wasn't using primo speakers but still didn't hear much of a difference when swapping power tubes from the 5150 and my XXX.

That's because you didn't send your tubes out to be modded :D its only $299 per quad and a 6 month wait!

Maybe in a studio setting under a microscope I could tell the difference.

Generally I don't find enough of a difference that can't be equalized with a slight eq adjustment and I buy something reliable. We play loud and in a band situation tubes that work are all that matter.

I have to say that I don't care much for jj el34's in many of my amps but think that the eh el34's and even eh 6ca7 sound as good or better then sed Nd the eh cost a lot less.

I don't have a vast collection of tubes, but what little I do have I can swap out and can't tell any difference. So, I buy JJ's.

I use only mesa tubes in my mark v. I have only had bad luck with other tubes. I had good luck experimenting with my mark iv, so I guess it can depend on the amp.
