5751 in V1

Post by eyeball987 »

My first post over here is actually on topic! :-bd

I have been running a 5751 in the PI spot for a while to add some clarity to a RM100 and tried one in V1 last week.

Results: :hmm:

- Lowered the overall amp gain a bit. No problem there though because I only have the modules gain on noon anyway. Plenty of gain on tap in the modules.
- Tone is punchier and seems more organic or at least what I think more organic would sound like.
- Amp is more touch responsive. It just feels better or there is more to feel. Hard to explain.
- Takes boosts better.

I have been jamming to some 80's hair bands, The Darkness, Ghost, Megadeth, and the like recently for a frame of tonal reference.

I rocked an RM100 for almost a year (its a long time for me )

I always liked running a 12AT7 in the PI.

I like a lower gain tube in master volume amps. Ive tried it in NMV amps, but it didnt seem to make improvements like in a MV amp.

yup. if you're not a dimed gain kind of guy then dropping the gain down via preamp tube is a great way to improve a lot of other qualities of an amp.

Yeah I am using a JAN Phillips 12AT7 in the PI of my DSL and it sounds great. I need to try a 5751 in V1.

Are you talking about V1 on the amp or the modules?

Tried tubes like crazy in that thing and I can say for sure a 12AT7 in the PI and 5751 in V1 is the best I oddball pairing I ever got that thing for preamp tubes.
Used to run Winged C 34s and 6L6s in it as well, FWIW I found whichever tubes are in the center tend to be more dominant to the tone.

I run a 5751 in the V1 and PI on most of my amps and it works great. The Marshall's really sound better that way.The 12at7 are not bad either but they tend to thin the tone out and decrease headroom. I put two RCA blackplate 5751's in my DSL and now it is much warmer and the clean channel is incredible that way. I was shocked at the difference it made in the DSL honestly.

I agree on 12AT7s thinning tone in gain stages (V1 and up) but I think in the PI position its the opposite in my experience.
Literally every amp I've ever tried its been an improvement in tone and feel.
I'm not sure how to describe the change in feel but I absolutely love it.
As for tone I've found it's great at removing some fizz from amps (especially true on my DSL and MTS stuff) but it also adds clarity.
Not to mention the added fullness you get tonally from being able to push the power tubes a little harder via master volume.

YMMV but that's been my experience without exception on the 10 amps or so I've tried this with.

I agree, but if you ever get a chance, try a 5751 in the PI. They work great .

I did but only on my RM100 IIRC.
Its been so long I can't remember how I felt about it other than I preferred the 12AT7 in that position over the 5751. :cop:
I did really dig the 5751 in the V1 position though, made the whole amp more manageable.
