I've played in metal bands. I've played in rock bands (both covers and originals). Now I play in a country/rock cover band. I will say that the best crowds have been with my current band.
Re: So does everyone here play rock/metal?
you mean actually playing out loud with real people? bass in church band a couple times a month - not metal, but it could be considered rock in a don't offend the blue-hairs kind of way.
other than that i like to play just about anything, as long as its over within a minute and half.

What he said. I play in a cover band. We do dance stuff and retro 80's non-hair metal stuff. People have a great time and I love it. It has helped expand my playing a ton.
I have been needing my original metal fix as of late. An old band I used to play in (my namesake, actually) is reforming to do a one-off show and I am excited for that as well. I always enjoyed showing up looking like the dork I do and watching expectations of the other bands. Especially ones that didn't know us and gave us the cocky once-over since we never fit the visual mold that alot of metal bands did at that time. Getting on stage and unleashing the Lamb of God-ripoff meets death metal flamethrower (I never said we were original

Metal is fun to play, but IMO it's just done. It's the new blues. A million bands have done the same thing. I can't remember the last time I heard a metal band and went "wow...this is really different". I feel like I have to make something new and different for my music to be expressive. How can you be expressive by copying everyone else?

Re: So does everyone here play rock/metal?
^actually, I feel the exact opposite in regards to metal. I don't need "new and different", I would really just like energetic, inspiring and occasionally melodic. I think ADD songwriting has taken a lot of the fun out of metal. I love some modern stuff, but I don't think you need to reinvent the wheel when you are looking for inspiration to headbang.

The same can be said about all the popular genres. But, unlike you, I don't need a band to be "different" as in genre creating/bending (not trying to put words in your mouth though) to enjoy any type of music. In fact...I almost exclusively listen to podcasts when I'm in my car now...
And, Joe, IF you find something that is the needle in the haystack, you are obligated to post it here!!!
For me, I just enjoy cranking up my amps and making noise that may or may not sound like a song. I'm not a good enough player to give a fuck about making money or any of that shit. Hell, I'm just not dedicated enough to bother myself with that kind of pressure.
So...I play metal, because I suck at guitar and can't play country...
