I agree, about the awful good tone (QOTSA comes to mind). No matter what I do, my tone is pretty good. not bragging, but I can't help but have it sound good. lol

I remember back when I started playing me and all my friends had your typical solid state amps-peavey, crate, 10watt fender jobs... In every case, we'd turn the mids down. It wasn't because we wanted to be brutal, we were into U2, REM, alt rock stuff. It's just that the amps sounded awful, and that was the best way to mitigate the awful. And of course we mostly played and practiced at home.
Once I got better stuff, the mids came up because it actually sounded good.
But I think it's overly simplistic to just talk about "mids". Mids can be boxy, flat, small sounding, honky, or cutting, exciting, electrifying... It can be anything from like 250hz up to 4k. And what sounds good depends on what the rest of your band sounds like anyway.
