A tale of two Teles.

Post by ovid9 »

It was the best of times...well, pretty much just the best of times. :D

Two pickup questions for telecasters. I've been thinking about putting some sort of rail pickup in my Classic Vibe. There's nothing wrong with the OEM pickup, its sounds pretty decent really, but I'm more of a 'bucker/P90 sorta fellow.

Most boutique pups are out of my price range so I'm looking more that Dimarzio/SD stuff. If you know of any others in that price range, please let me know!

I've been considering the Dimarzio Chopper T or possibly the Fast Track T as it seems to bridge the gap between bucker & SC a bit. Alternatively I've thought about SD Hot Rails or the little '59. I have a '59 in the bridge of my Agile LP copy and love it.

And since I mentioned TWO teles in the title, the second title is one I'm considering that would have a duncan Phat Cat in the Neck and a......not sure what in the Bridge. Again, probably a bucker of some sort, but what would go good with a Phat Cat in a swamp ash body with a maple neck? :D

You really need to check out the Bill Lawrence stuff. Look up Wilde pickups, they are boutique and are cheaper than SD or Dimarzio. Though, the most important thing, they sound unreal! I love, love, love his stuff!!!

Listen to Cole.

The Wilde stuff is the absolute shit. Look at it this way, Bill Lawrence pretty much invented the aftermarket pickup. He's been doing it longer(and better in my mind) than anyone else. Dimarzio, duncan and a bunch of others apprenticed under him. He's old and in failing health now. So buy in before he isn't around anymore and prices skyrocket for originals.

As for which pickups, Twin Blades all damn day. L48T for a single. L90 for a humbuckers.

You're looking at $100 for both. Can any other manufacturers beat that?

If you went the L90/L45 setup you would need to get a lower henry of the L90 to match the output of the L45. Something like the 2.8H would probably be just fine to match.

These pickups are the most clear, articulate, and toneful pickups I have used. I have tried his L500s, L90s, L290, L600, and L280 pickups and they are all awesome! My favorites are the L90 humbuckers and the L280 single coils. If your fancy is true single coil sounds, his Keystone set for the Tele sound amazing and are hella cheap!

ke_2 actually mentioned the Wilde pickups in one of the posts that got lost.

They are amazingly reasonably priced and I'm thinking I'm going to end up snagging some of his stuff fo-sho!

Chopper T is good, I've had one before, a bit bright/thin for my tastes though.

I'd say the Tone Zone T is the way to go if you want a fatter humbucker tone that isn't too hot IMO.

I have the Tone Zone S in my Starfield; it's badass

I will take the Tone Zone under advisement and keep the lookout for one.

I think I might end up with both a Wilde for one and a Tone Zone T for another.

The L290 has quite a bit of oomph to it. It screams rock, but roll back the volume and it cleans up very nicely! The L290 performs well in all scenarios of gain!

It sounds awesome! This particular fuzz gets really thick sounding and is rather aggressive, but it sounds good with both humbuckers and single coils. Though it sounds better with lower output pups. The L290 has just enough drive and cut to push into that thick fuzz!

I wish I could record something for you, but I have a newborn here and don't want to disturb her... I might try here in a bit to see if I can record something for you!

It is a bum deal, there used to be a fantastic video of the Wilde L290/L280 Tele set being played through a Dr. Z amp. That video was what convinced me to do the L290TL/L280TN!

Damn. Impressive. Very impressive.

So, the Humbucker sized pup on the wilde site that ISN'T the L500....what is it? And, when it says inductance, I'm not 100% sure what it means. I'm used to seeing things rated like 10k, or 14.6k or whatever.

That is the L90, and it is awesome! This is my favorite humbucker ever! I want to say the highest Henrie is about 13K D.C. Just to let you know the 6 H has plenty of muscle, as well the 4 H. These pickups have more of a vintage type frequency. They are most similar to a PAF as far as sound , but aren't muddy!

These are what were suggested above with the L45 single coils.
