Trade or no trade? DSL 100 for Laney VH...

Post by JiveTurkey »

Got a trade offer for a DSL 100 for my VH100(and love yet don't use yet in a band) :)
I have never heard one in person. Good, bad? How heavy is the gain channel? How is the resale on the Marshall versus the Laney? Better low volume tones on the Marshall?

Both are great amps, you can't really go wrong. I think the Laney would probably fetch a tad more coin, but probably not much. The amp market is insanely low right now.
Good deals: Guitar Billy, Crunchtime, Draco Aron, Holy War, Crank, Yo Squig, Moops, Elemenope, Edge of Darkness, Abstract, Chris JD, Ricky Rockhardo, Norton 666, Freehandarson, Dolf, Van_Muddlestein, Yarbicus, Schweezly, Nateispro, Conky, MikeO, Whiskey Face, Broslinger, Mamberg, Ajaxlepenski, Ovid 9, SAH5150, Axe, Greatmutah, Rubyguitargod, Hardvalve, JerEvil, Jive Turkey

I am seriously thinking about it. After checking out clips on Youtube, it seems like the DSL is little higher gain than the VH. I am in total unnecessary gear whore mode now and allow to me to confirm that the amp market is indeed at an all time low from what I have seen. Things not moving for weeks that should go much faster. Sucks for buyer and seller.

I'd take the laney, I prefer their VH voicing to the DSL

Buy DSL100 outright, send it AND the Laney to me where I will take good care of them. :D

I would kill to own either of those amps. Seems like a fair trade if you're not using the Laney and have a use for the DSL.

For myself, I would love to have both just because I love both the VH100 & DSL tones. :D

I will take your suggestion into consideration Ovid :) Laney is great but I am on a gear binge right now. I can't quite bring myself to fire up the VH in my living room while the family is watching TV. Not that I can do that with a 100watt Marshall either... :D

^I was waiting for you to chime in Billy as I know you have had both :) It seems like there is little more clarity on the Laney with a little more sizzle on the Marshall. At least as much as youtube clips can demonstrate. I really dont need to trade, but I know I have been having issues getting my tuned down guitars to cooperate with my tonal desires in the Laney. On the other hand, the Laney sounds glorious for everything else I have thrown at it. Kind of a tough call even if I only have first hand experience with the Laney. The only Marshall I have had was a Mode 4 which no one usually counts (though for a person not concerned with a band mix, does do a good solid state metal tone).

On a completely different note, thnx for providing a forum to perpetuate gear whoring. First world problems are usually hte best kind.

ok I thought about this a little longer  and I think if I could only have one... I'd go with the DSL. Simply because the Marshall voicing is so universal, it's a lot easier to get just about any rock or metal tone out of it. The Laney sounds amazing and it's very versatile but it does have an unique voicing. While it CAN do just about any style, it will do its own " version" of that style, if that makes any sense. With the Marshall, chances are the most classic players on just about any rock/metal style played a Marshall at a point or another, so there's a lot more style reference with these amps.

I am not even sure I am making any sense here

Okay, Lany fanboy here, I actually like how the Laney sounds great but doesn't sound like every other amp out there. And they're a little "unique".

The other guitarist has a DSL combo (not the reissue generation) of I **think** 50 watts (might be less) and a TSL 100 watt head. They sound great for Marshall tones. I can dial on tones that sound close to his tones on my VH100R, but he's hard pressed to dial anything other than the Marshall tone.

FWIW every DSL I've heard sounded awesome so it wouldn't be like you're getting a Gorilla for your Laney.
