New pedal build thread (Way Huge/Dan Armstrong content)

Post by Gunslinger »

So here we go, just got in a whole bunch of new components the other day, can't wait to get this one together. Eventually this pile of parts is gonna be a Red Llamma and a Green Ringer in the same box. I've wanted to build some sort of fuzz/overdrive/octave effect for a while now. Originally I was gonna do a strait up Way Huge Piercing Moose clone which is essentially a beefed up Fox Tone Machine(and still may do that), but I somewhere along the way I found a demo of this combination and really liked the way it sounded so I'm doing this one first.

Both effects will be able to be operated independently, or when both effects are on, the overdrive will feed into the octave, which should mash up the sound quite interestingly lets say, hopefully a la a Hendrix-y type sound. I bought an extra big enclosure, cause I'm not exactly sure how much room I'm gonna need, but after looking at it, it may be too big but oh well.

Size comparison compared to my previous build. This mother fucker is gonna be huge

The knobs I bought are smaller than I thought, smaller than an MXR type knob. Theres gonna be too much open space on this, I think I'm gonna put chicken head's on it to help fill it out. I'll save these ones for another project.

And here's the Green Ringer board. The schematic I used showed to use the same holes on a few components, so I had to enlarge them slightly with a dremel. I also had to use the dremel on the middle socket where the diodes are, the just barely fit into the socket. Kind of a pain in the ass, but there's not much real estate on these boards.

I hate to directly solder diodes to boards because I don't want to run the risk of burning one up accidentally, and also I like to swap things out from time to time. The schematic also called to match the diodes as close as possible for the strongest octave effect, which is something I didn't do it should still produce a good octave, and if it doesn't I'll just swap out the diodes until I come across a set that sounds best.

I really wish I had a better camera, I know these photos suck.

Next up: Paint. I'm gonna do a swirl finish on this one.

Thanks man, I'm still getting the hang of pedal building. This build is going nice and smooth so far.

And the swirl. This is my first attempt ever at swirling. It didn't quite come out how I was expecting, but I'm still pretty happy with the overall result.

Front. Looks more like one of those Suhr drip guitars than an actual swirl, but I think it came out pretty cool though.

Back. This side probably came out the best.

Overall the hardest part of this was for me just pulling it out of the tub. I maybe went too fast coming out of the water, which may be one of the reasons why it ran and the front side didn't come out as well as the back. I also used flat colors, that could play a part in it, maybe I should have thinned them out a little? After I get a few more attempts under my belt, I'm confident they'll come out better, at least I know what to watch out for in the future. All the paint used btw was those little Testors bottles you can get for like a buck.

Next step will be spraying clear on in and leveling out the paint/clear.

The plan is to just use some aerosol polyurethane, spray a few coats and sand it smooth, and repeat that process a few times. Then I'll buff the final coat out. Hopefully it comes out o.k.
