JJ EL34s: opinions?

Post by PlayboyChris »

I scored a quad of JJ EL34s, new pulls from a Bogner amp, for 30 bucks. Good price? I thought so.

I've had good luck with JJ EL84s; how are the EL34s? I'm not looking for ejaculation-inducing tone necessarily; just keeping them on hand to swap into my Tremoverb if I feel like it.

I like them a lot. I've used them in Dual Rectos and Marks. They currently occupy the outside sockets in my Mark III. I think of them as pretty deep bass and balanced for an EL34 - EL34 with a hint of 6L6, if you like. They're also tough.

They don't have a ton of personality; if I was using an amp that depended on EL34 crunch for its sound, rather than most of the tone coming from the preamp, I think I'd shell out the extra scratch for Winged Cs.
"If there was only a way that I couldn't even any less than I already can't then I'd gladly not, but I think I've entered some quantum paradox, dark matter levels of can't evening where the total absolute value of not evenness exceeds all ability to explain the can'ting." - MR RUBATO

They are fantastic. I don't care what "reviewers" say out there anymore. I listen to my ears and people I trust on here. I like the EL34's best for a "rock clean", to get the plexi types crunch, and they add a nice sizzle to high gain as well. I like the JJ's.

They're okay but for the same price I'd take the EL34B-STRs

Me too. Or better yet, just get the Shuguang (Sino) labeled ones without the Ruby rebranding for half the price. :D

Edit: Looks like the price difference isn't that big in the US for these.

Depends on the amp for me. I really like the JJ EL34's in my Marshall. Kinda a touch darker tone and that's exactly what that amp needed.

In my Peters I prefer the Gold Lion KT77, Gold Lion KT88 and SED =C= el 34 or KT88. :-B :-B

JJ power tubes have had some reliability issues as of late. Also many of their EL34's run hot and I would be concerned about running them in a Mesa without a bias mod to ensure that they are running in a "safe" range.

I think they are best suited for taming brighter amps like marshalls for example.

They sound great in my DSL
Soldano SLO 100
Marshall DSL 50
Mesa Boogie MK III
Peavey 5150 II
Bugera 1960
Jet City JCA 50
Jet City JCA 20
