Good inexpensive Fuzz recommends?

Budget is about $100, looking for a decent sounding fuzz. I'm not really familiar with the different kinds of fuzzes. Any reason why I shouldn't just get a Big Muff Pie for the price? Anything out there that people would recommend?

The Swollen Pickle is pretty cool, but it is a tweakers pedal. Lots of different tones and internal tone shaping pots as well.

Knowing what sort of fuzz you are looking for would be helpful.

Are you trying to sound like Hendrix? Gilmour? Rolling Stones? Explosions in the Sky? etc.

Willing to go used?

What amp/guitar do you play?

Do you want it to sound "Old"? "Huge?" "Wooly"?

without knowing what you want, here are some ideas:

Fuzzhugger - Algal Bloom - very versatile, heavily modified Fuzz Face.
Black Arts Toneworks - LSTR -, Russian-style Muff. huge bass. smooth. relatively cheap.
Smallsound/Bigsound - Hawk - simple, huge, nasty, cool

Cheapest option (and they sound pretty cool) would be to build a Bazz Fuss. Super simple circuit - you don't need to have pedal building experience to do the build.

Beyond that you really should specify what sort of tones you're after here... particular bands who the sound you're after or at least Muff vs. Fuzzface

I'm looking to use it for Stoner Doom type stuff. Bands like Kylesa, Kyuss and Baroness. I want to get a low heavy sound but something that doesn't flub out. Some fuzzes I've tried in the past seem to flub out on the low notes. It would be going through a Fender Blues Deluxe or Peavey Classic 30, using a PRS SE singlecut.

To keep it under $100, and BMP with Tone Wicker could get you there too. A Pharoah, Hoof, or Musket would be a lot better, but would be beyond $100.

Thing is, to me anyway, all those bands tones are mainly overdriven amps. There's definitely fuzz there too, though.

I've seen Baizley from Baroness use a Blackout Effectors Twosome fuzz. Well above 100 bucks, but it's two of their pedals in one, IIRC, so one of those might get you what you're after. Not sure which two though.

You could also talk to Mark at Make Sounds Loudly.

He builds almost anything, including righteous fuzzes for CHEAP.

He could do a custom Muff for like $100.

Boss Power Drivers are pretty rad. I bought my first one for $20 and after it was stolen bought another for the same price.

Try stacking fuzz'es and boosts if you're into really heavy saturation.

Also take a look at the FZ-2 if you want to sound like Electric Wizard, you can find them for less than 100 sometimes
