um, you want to buy some fuzz pedals anyways? I have some killer stuff to sell.

Yes, I want to. But I can't. I have to get rid of some shizz. Told myself no more gear till I get rid of the stuff that I don't use. You wanna buy a couple of 7 strings?

Well, the week before Christmas the x-pipe on my Cobra snapped in two. So I've gotta replace that. My wife and I will be putting back some money to each buy the new xbox console when it comes out. Aside from that, the rest will be saved or invested. I just bought a new acoustic with Christmas cash, so no new gear purchases. Is ok, I've already got more than I need.

...did I just say that???

Same here. My wedding that's a week from tomorrow is costing me an arm and a leg (go figure). I need to get that shit under control before my daughter arrives in June. My lovely wife to be is even giving me her share of her return to help pay it off.

I may also get rid of my car and put it towards one of these. Chicago does have 5-10 terrible days in winter though where I basically wouldn't be going anywhere.

My drummer says he saves his gas receipts from driving to shows and practice and writes it off on his taxes. I was like can you do that?

What am I getting with my tax refund? Probably a nice dinner for me and my wife, seeing how it's likely to be somewhere between $100-200. I'm way past the years when I used to excitedly go nuts with a $4-5k tax refund of my own goddamn money that I should have had all along. These days we set exemptions up to come out as close as possible to even, without owing anything.

Besides, we (we both work at the same place) bonus twice a year, and that provides our splurgey fun money. With the last one, we got the kids' holiday presents, my Recto cab, an iPhone 5 for her and a Chromebook for me.
"If there was only a way that I couldn't even any less than I already can't then I'd gladly not, but I think I've entered some quantum paradox, dark matter levels of can't evening where the total absolute value of not evenness exceeds all ability to explain the can'ting." - MR RUBATO

its tough man, at least for me. i dont like getting a refund but mid year i switched to being salary plus commision. they treat bonuses and commisions differently, generally they take more, so its hard to estimate. i dont want to owe so i think im getting a large refund even though i raised my deductions.

best thing would be speak with your hr dept as well as a good accountant. basically if they are taking out too much (you get a refund) you need to raise your deductions but if you raise them too high they wont take enough and you could owe them money which would suck.

Yeah, my worry would be if I raise them too much and then end up owing. Im not really sure how Ill do everything...taxes are gonna be funny this year since Leah only worked for 8 months, and James was born. And we arent married on paper because she can get good insurance for her and James without those papers...my insurance at work is garbage. So, this year will be a little whacky. Hopefully next year will be easier to figure everything out since Leah wont be working and probably wont be filing taxes...itll just be me. I dunno...we'll see. I get a bonus in the summer, too, so Im interested to see how that goes. Maybe Ill just leave it all alone and take the big check around tax time.

Raf, depends on what you claim now. My guess is you have your exemptions set for when you were single...1 or 2. I'm married with 3 kids and a wife who works....I claim 4. Our refund is right around a grand. I could claim higher but I'm not a fan of writing a check in April. This allows me wiggle room if I work more overtime than normal or the wife gets a sizable bonus....all things that could bump us into a higher tax bracket (our current base income keeps us pretty close to that jump as it is.)

There are tons of W-4 exemption calculators out there that can help you plan.

I know there are people that like the big refunds and that's cool. With a family, I'd prefer to maximize my paycheck and have my money working for me and not the federal govt.....who, right now, seems a little inept at managing money.

I have my exemptions set at 0. I used to have them at 1, but I owed one year when I was in school, so I changed it. Now, Im basically supporting myself, my wife, and my kid, and if my checks can be a little bit bigger, that might be more beneficial, though I do like budgeting on what I bring in currently...but theres no reason I cant still do that. Id rather not be loaning the govt money for free...Ill look into the w-4 exemption calculators. Thanks!!
