In my "office" we can make fun of anyone or anything. There is zero political correctness.
Hell, sometimes we have a couple beers on the clock, rule #1 is the foreman always has a cooler in the bed full of beer. I heard the boss doesn't give a fuck.
I laugh when the office losers come out and revel at how fucking awesome it is out there with us. They always thought being in the office was better.
Then the inevitable, "can I maybe learn how.." Nope.
Stay in the office you poosy. Don't need you ruining our party.
minus the beers on clock its the same for my job. I work in a block yard 70s hours a week and I wouldn't want it to ever change. telling worthless fucks to go home to mommas couch or get over their case of puss Idis is the norm.

Actually, in IT especially, the idea of open offices are becoming much more common. I work for the government, and our CIO is talking about creating an open environment...Why? It encourages collaboration and movement...supposed to generate innovation, blah blah blah...The idea came from google and yahoo I believe who both do similar things.
Personally? I hate the idea, however, I'm a programmer, and I need a place to zone in and focus, so programmers generally get to keep their own spaces, for that very reason.

No, the "why" is that it's a shitload cheaper to have a giant room with fake walls. Everything else is bullshit window dressing.
I truly think the open office thing works depending on your industry.
In companies that are supposed trying to be cutting edge and creative I think its a good fit (specifically talking about techs here honestly) but in other industries its not as great. My closest friend works for a start up financial tech company that was just purchased by Paypal for a huge fucking sum. They had the open office thing, a room with hammocks, beer in the fridge, an open vacation policy, etc etc. All that new agey business stuff. According to my friend and his coworkers it was the greatest work environment any of them had ever been in. That worked well for them, in that industry. Would be shit in my industry, and I assume many of yours.
That doesn't mean its inherently a bad or good idea.
