Love me some Alex Skolnick , but he has a famously bad live guitar tone . I saw them 3 times this last year and every time it was almost comically bad . WAAAY too bright and buried in reverb/delay. Eric Peterson on the other hand.......... tone of the gods!

Maybe this new amp will fix that

Didn't he always use Marshall Mode 4's?

Yes he did. In an interview I read he called them the greatest amp Marshall ever made. He said that scours ebay for them all the time.
And, I agree with the other poster about Alex's live tone. Utter shit. I've seen them probably 5 times and every time his tone was suicide inducing. I love his playing but I absolutely hate his live tone.

The irony is that he uses an SLO100 in the studio on their last album and his tone was incredible.

On Dark Roots of the Earth? I thought I remembered him using a mode 4 on that one. It's been awhile since I've watched the behind the scenes DVD though.

just saw a clip the other day of him doing overdubs for that album, twas a SLO100, sounded, well, it's hard to make that amp sound bad.
