What to do with my old car

Post by Dickarms »

So i have a 2003 Jetta, with a blown engine and a shit ton of cosmetic flaws. Wat do?

-sell for the quick and cheap (guitar center method)
-part out
-find used 1.8T and get it running again?

Last year I donated my Nissan Altima of similar age and condition to KCSN, a public radio station that is about the only one in L.A. playing decent music now. If you itemize on taxes it can make quite an impact on your return, though it does make it even more of a PITA to file than usual.

Parting out takes some patience, but that will probably get you the most money. I've done it with guitars and have gotten much more form individual parts than the constructed guitar would have brought.

Set it on fire.

Then set yourself on fire for owning a Jetta. :p

Me, cause I'm lazy would just put it up on CL for cheap because parting out is too big a PITA.

Though, it looks like you can find used engines in the $1400-1550 range down in Texas.

Check out car-part.com and see if any of them are close by you.

Sorry, low end VWs have never impressed me much excepting the diesel models. Granted, I'm fairly certain I only have seen the shitty ones, but they seem to invariably be used up by 80k.

Seriously though, if you or your buddies have the know-how to drop a used motor in it and that's all that's wrong its always easier to sell a running car than a non-running one.

probably just off it on CL. that car has been enough trouble. not due to its pedigree, but due to abuse by previous/current owner.

i deserve a new car anyway. we got that soul, now i want something for me. sharing a car SUUUUUUUUUCKS

See if any dealerships are offering x number of duckets for your old busted shit when trading toward a new heap.

May be able to get more trade value and skip dealing with CL people.

You know how normal CL people are. Step down several levels. That's the group that vultures for busted cars.

I'd sell for the best offer I could get and move on. I can't be fucked with parting out a POS car, just get rid of it, use the money as part of a down payment on a new car and call it a day.

I knew a couple mexican dudes that used to go on craigslist and police auctions buying up salvage title cars. They'd fix them up in their hoopty shop out back and then sell them back on craigslist as normal.

I think the best option here is to find some people on meetup that have a similar situation you do.

You all drive out to Manor or Cedar Park, then have a destruction derby event/mutual car burning. The neighborhoods will never notice. :cop:

Don't sell it outright or part it out or screw around with used or rebuilt motors. Donate it to a charity or trade it in on something else or sell it to a scrap yard. Being that you can't drive it I would lean toward a charity donation or a junk yard where they can come to you and pick it up.

i dont really get the charity thing.
- i like helping people, but how does giving them my busted shit help ? (legitimately curious)
- i could get $500 now, or $500 on my tax return...whats the difference? (also legitimately curious, as ialways file a pretty normal ass return)

I would give it to an animal rescue/shelter or spay/neuter clinic. They will sell it to a scrap yard and use the proceeds to fund their work. You can deduct it on your taxes while you feelsgoodman.jpg.

Not sure what the scrap market is doing now, but a couple years ago, it was so high, people were driving running cars across the scales to scrap them. A friend of mine hauled off an old 4wd truck & got $700 & some change.

If it's a 4 cylinder car, check to see if you have a dirt track in your area. Alot of tracks have started running 4 cyl classes as an entry level race class. You may find someone who's into that who'd want it for that purpose who'd give yu a couple hundred bucks for it. The guys here that do it buy up about any kind of 4cy front wheel drives for that. Mainly Neons, Escorts,Hondas, Toyotas, etc.
