Does anyone listen to Tom Petty on purpose?

Post by VTM »

One of his songs just came on and I think I hate him even more than I hate U2.

Tom Petty is what Bob Dylan fans listen to when not being ass plowed by Bob Dylan's Butt-Hammer.

Yes.

I also like U2.

I only like BD when other people are covering his songs.

I just listed to Highway 61 Revisited start to finish last night.
One of the best albums of all time.

Thanks for reminding me to listen to some Tom Petty!

What makes Tom Petty for me is that he writes stuff that's fairly fun to play.

I'm also a fan of his band - Mike Campell, Stan Lynch and Benmont Tench are amazing talents. I'd like to hear them out of their comfort zone, though. Like covering some wilder stuff where they have to roll out all the stuff they can do - understatement is nice, but I'd like to hear them all cut loose more.

I'm a HUGE Tom Petty fan. Admittedly, my ex-wife got me really into him. Seen Tom and the Heartbreakers live 5 times. Every show was bad ass! Mike Campbell has Godlike tone and is a seriously under the radar killer guitarist.

And yeah, I love U2 as well.

Does anyone ever listen to David Lee Broth on purpose? :hi5:

Yes. Love me some Petty - especially listening to Mike Campbell play.

I dig U2 as well. I got some respect for what The Edge can do with all them fx - I'd go cross eyed and shit myself if I had that many fx which would make me sound like I'm.......

Bob Dylan. Guy sounds like he's singing whilst taking a dump. Not a fan. Maybe some of The Edge's fx could help?

I got your back on this one. For one song :) Last Dance with Mary Jane is the laziest POS of a song. I would not be surprised at all if it was the inspiration for this thread...

That song aside, I think Petty has some great songs. The few I heard off his last album were actually pretty damn good. He fits in with Mellencamp where he has a 30+ year career yet you only hear the 4 same songs on the radio. Which is another conversation entirely.

...growing up in the 80s, imo; U2 was great. Haven't followed them in decades, but I loved them back in the day. Without Dylan, my favorite Hendrix recording would not exist.

I will admit I like the duet he did with Stevie Nicks. I will not admit to sucking dicks or anything of that nature.

Yeah, for any of those long-running writers, you really need to listen to the stuff that never gets airplay. There are always a few gems, sometimes even stuff the band didn't like. Petty's Mudcrutch project was pretty good, and the 'making of' video showing their rehearsal building was pure guitar and amp porn. All the stuff they had laying around in there...

The Edge I find interesting. He plays very weird lines, and when I've seen him demonstrate it there is always something I had twisted around. Much like Billy Gibbons, if you find the riff tricky, you have something backwards. I think it's cool the amount of space The Edge (The Hat ?) fills with simple stuff, and I like that Adam Clayton carries the chords and counterpoint.

Yep, Petty and U2 both good to my ears.

I'd rather direct my dislike towards someone like Bruce Springsteen.

If Springsteen's melodrama doesn't put you off (for me, it's Meatloaf), then you may want to check out this :

I like Tom Petty and U2 for that matter. As far as Bob Dylan, it's like Ovid9 said, I like some of his songs covered by others.

I like Tom Petty.

U2 and Springsteen are both in the "really dislike but have to reluctantly admit they have one or two really good songs" category.

My kid loves him, and I'm what you'd call a moderate fan. I don't own all his stuff but I know most of his tunes, even the stuff he did with the traveling wilburys. Also, his vocal stuff is in my range so me and Little man will roll around town jamming Tom Petty songs and singing to the music. Hearing my 3-1/2yo sing "I won't back down" makes me happy.

I dig alot of U2's stuff but then I was born in '76 so I like different stuff than some. U2 were pretty huge my whole childhood and my dad listened to quite a bit of them, along with Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin and all the really cool shit that came about during the 60's 70's and even the 80's.

Some of it probably depends on your age I suppose. If you're a 16yo who waxes poetic about your memories of the 90's then U2 probably isn't on your radar.

This kid in GC who couldn't have been more than 18 was getting all "teh 90's had teh real shit in music" and all that sort of stuff. I'm thinking that most of his memories of the 90's probably centered around pissing and shitting himself and watching Barney on TV. :hmm:
