if you want to "make it", you HAVE to look the part. Especially these days.

If you want to play the local fair or arts block day gig......you HAVE to look the part to continue to be successful. There's good money in that shit.

If that's your gig, more power to you. :)

For me, I'm with EndTime.

For me it's simple wear whatever the fuck you want.. If you suck, then you suck. It don't matter how you look.. Same thing goes in the opposite.. When you fucking kill them you can be wearing flip flops, shorts and your own band shirt.. I'd guess I've seen more shit bands look the part of "proper"stage look, so I'd probably give the advice to not look the part... If anyone were to leave before you ever play a note cause of how someone looks, then they're a douche anyway..

If you can't bring the energy to the crowd with your music and stage presence, then no amount of dress up will ever matter...

 Not for "looks" ... because I usually get hot . That's not something that's "thought out"

Befriend the sound guy. I make a point to buddy up with him, buy him a beer, etc. Helps a LOT.

Be quick with setup, and don't noodle/dick around during whatever sound check you get.

Wear tight pants.

I always figured either a band has it or they don't, it's a combination of loads of things including but not limited to magic and wonder and god smiling on your art.

You can look like a fucking twat but if you pull it off nobody will mind. Or you could put loads of effort into dressing just right for your musical style and come off as a poser.

Example: When my singer gets to the end of a song and is hanging upside down from the ceiling, people clap and have a great time. If I did exactly the same thing, people would be scared and call the authorities.

All you can do is be yourself and if you're lucky sometimes people will get what you're doing.

So I guess my only rule is that if you need to spell the rules of the game out to someone, then that someone doesn't get it.

new one: that bullshit not-full-hetfield-spread-not-indie-closed leg stance. see: rob chappers.

in fact, this thread can really be summed up in one rule: see rob chappers doing it? fucking dont.

(Actually, I don't know the first thing about Chappers' band or musical existence. All I know is the videos of him and Captain Lee where they do the guitar shootouts. But I think those are stellar.)

video in question is one of him doing "full volume" demos of the RV50 and the TV50 (full volume = in bar, with a terrible mic and a shitty band)

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xlqtuq ... pers_music

that's exhibit A. if you look like that live, this thread is for you. id literally rather you just stand there than that bullshit "rock stance", usually accompanied by the head-nod-eye-contact-grimace and tone-king-arm extension.

One I forgot ...

no Guitar "holders".

I think Elvis may have started this. Singer holding a guitar, only to strum it a few times & jump around & pose with it. I see this alot in country, pop, & other
forms of "dishwater" music. My wife was watching America's Got Talent last night, and there was some 12-13 year old women's pop band kid, posing with a flying V that he only stummed a hand full of times. He just jumped around & posed. While he was posing, a guy who was actually playing was standing in the back in the dark. I dont get the reasoning for that. For some reason, guitar "holders" piss me off. If you're not gonna play the goddamn thing, dont carry it around.

Which brings me to another rule:

White dudes and dreadlocks... No, Sir.

Course this one is just a general appearance rule and should be observed regardless of musicianship.

A lot of good one already mentioned. Here's a few more to add:

No wireless heasdet mics, unless you're a drummer that does lead/backup vocals. Otherwise, leave that shit to Britney Spears.

Don't use the excuse of having a wireless unit to jump out into the crowd and act like you're some badass. You look like a douche.

we all know wireless units were created for the sole purpose of guitar spins. :cop: lol
