I almost don't want to live in America anymore...

Post by madryan »

Was reading a story in the paper about how some low income folks are paying 6% of their entire budget to keep their kid in clean diapers. This in and of itself is astounding but when one legislator tried to get something passed to help out evidently the usual demagogues like Rush Limbaugh came out of the wood-works and accused him of "Pampering the Poor" as if that's somehow witty or some shit.

As a single parent of a kid who just got out of diapers I can relate. That shits expensive. Plus, you have very little control over your own life sometimes so the (largely conservative) idea that these people should have just made better choices is utter shit. Sometimes you find yourself with a new baby and no industry, no house, no assets, and have to start over. It happened to me and I'm sure it's happened to millions of other folks.

Increasingly, if one looks at what our country really spends money on a couple of the biggies are preferential tax treatment for dividends and capital gains, which means Mitt Romney and his income bracket, and bombs to drop on brown skinned people. Evidently we can't be bothered to invest in our own human capital.

Have the retards taken over or something?

No just Reagan worshippers who think that God hates the poor. Maybe they should focus more on how much Jesus loved the poor.

So a guy was just walking down the street when a big vagina fell out of the sky on his dick?

What about all the people who made the right decisions who don't get help?

You are rewarding bad decisions? Seems legit.

I don't know how I feel about this.....

I mean, I am a single parent too. Diapers were expensive, specially on a single income. But I didn't feel the govt should have helped me with it. My son's deadbeat mom certainly should've (and didn't) but the govt? hmm no, not really. I really couldn't go out, play in bands etc until my son was about 7 years old. Started my career working as a customer service agent at like $10/hr (for a family of 2) and worked my way up to a better pay/position and these days I am far from rich but I am comfortable/stable.

I'm also brown skinned with an accent and would probably have qualified to every possible program out there back in the day (not anymore since my income increased substantially over the last decade or so). I never even looked into it. I didn't feel that the govt owed my shit, I wanted to do it on my own. And I did it. My kid is doing great now, has his own bedroom, games, skateboard, bass gear etc... shit kid even got his own private bathroom with a tub!!
Not thanks to the govt though but thanks to his dad relentless hard work so he's growing up knowing what's up with that.

Oh and I do want to live in America. Love this country, tons of opportunity, even today.

That's just me though. YMMV.

While i can get on board with slagging Rush Limbaugh and about2 dozen other media big mouth fucksticks, i can't support what makes you ashamed to be American.. lol.. I want less government aide. . Hell, i want less government.. Certain things in life are the responsibility of the people involved and that should be it. And for the most part, raising and supporting your kids should be the responsibility of the parents.. Much like Billy, i made it happen on some pretty low wages initially.. I may be slightly dark skinned and speak with a (Chicago) accent ;-) but prolly my biggest obstacle was only being 20 and a long hair stoner at the time.. I went and worked 2 jobs, bought a condo and got into a trade that eventually became my career and money maker.. If i was handed help, I'd prolly still be looking for handouts today.. The circumstances i created made me man up before many dudes do... But that means nothing cause all our paths should be unique.. And that's only gonna happen when people support themselves

There are tons of assistance programs for low income earners. Free rent, free food, ultility assistance, free school lunch, welfare, etc, the list goes on and on.

No one is forcing people to reproduce.

Maybe we should focus more on creating higher paying jobs rather than more govt handout programs.

So nobody has really addressed the fact that while (Conservatively) Romney alone probably got about a $5 Million dollar tax break this year, and every year since the Bush tax cuts because of a whole host of give-aways to rich folks, it's somehow ideologically "Wrong" to take care of the poor.

There's an inherent problem with any economic system, and capitalism is no exception. There's always going to be a significant part of your population scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's a demographic trend problem, not a "bootstraps" problem as any effort by those folks will simply self correct should they en-mass all the sudden become middle class or some shit.

So different societies fix this in different ways. Some better than others. We tend to be moving the wrong direction, in that our wealth distribution is getting skewed much worse and opportunity for everyone who's not a member of the relatively high income earners is lower than it was. This is a function of our changing economy as well as tax policy and social dynamics among other things.

The problem is, and what pisses me off, is fucktards from right-leaning welfare states like pretty much the whole south, who bad mouth social programs, when my liberal blue state is supporting their asses. I guess you could say it's the discourse and the fact that poor people who take a handout are demonized, while the elite like the Romney's who get more in handouts every year than everyone in my immediate area, are held up as somehow deserving of it.

No, but they have learned how to hit the "start new topic" button at GAB.

You have very little control of your life? You're telling me you have littler control over who you decide to fuck? Think of all the steps that must be taken for this to occur. Apparently to you, none of which are controllable.

If that wasn't bad enough, you somehow find time to try and bring a race bait in.

Nope. Condoms are great.

But if one breaks...or for whatever reason doesn't work...and she ends up pregnant...and neither of you want a kid. FUCK the republicans who say you have to carry the thing full term. THAT'S what I'm saying. Make better decisions THERE.

FUCK all you want! Fuck everyone! Get your rocks off! Just don't make kids if you don't want/can't support them. It's not fair to the children.

in the us, diapers are approaching medical equipment status. so many features and such high cost we are going to start needing HMOs for them, from what i hear.
which is why when i was a kid, i was in cloth diapers. it can be done

there is a happy medium society can reach (but never will) where people will be legitimately taken care of at a minimum, but not rewarded for bad decisions. welfare should be basic needs, which would be an incentive to avoid it all costs instead of the mass system abuse currently going on. pregnancy termination should be legal and encouraged. jesus has no fucking place in politics. think its wrong? frown quietly and dont watch tv.

My friends use cloth diapers. Very cheap....

problem

Nevermind the silliness of an entire program just for dolling out diapers. If you want to help the poor, give them money...not whatever product someone has a brilliant save-the-world idea about

That's a rhetorical question/statement...

Ever think that the kids might be a fixture before life shits the bed? My wife was about 3mo pregnant and we went from making about 80k a year to about a quarter of that. Then, to make shit more fun she decided, once Brodie was born that being a parent was way too hard and way too much responsibility so she more or less wanted to re-live her early 20's again.

Meanwhile I'm left to re-train, fight a custody battle, and raise my son on about 10% of what my former lifestyle was based on.

Shit happens.
