WTF? They shut down ALL internet cafes because the Lt. Governor was caught up in a gambling scandal? That's like banning all vehicles because she was involved in a hit and run.

Why not?

I mean, just cause we have a few on the forum who buck the trend, every news story from the poorest to the pols seem to prove those here are the exception to the rule.

Holy fail.

Well. If you don't like our laws...you can jus git out!

Our laws are what makes this country great. Our hardworking legislators know what's best for us, that's why we elected them.

I had some dealings a few years ago with the law firm mentioned in the story. Friendly guys on the surface, but on the inside they make sharks look like teddy bears. Good luck on the state coming off Scot free on that lawsuit.

Voting in this state is still like a circus event. After the first Gore/Bush election voting should be suspended here for at least two generations. :cop:

I have quite a few relatives in Florida so I have visited the state very frequently. When I was younger I thought about how awesome it would be to live there. As I grew older I realized it was a fine place to go on vacation, but living there would be impossible. As evidenced by discussions I've have with my own Floridian relatives, the educational system down there must be horrendous.

The Keys are awesome, but the rest of the state could be destroyed and I wouldn't care.

I see you are from Reston. I lived in N. Virginia for 64 years and couldn't afford to live there any longer, so last year I begrudgingly moved here partly because most of my family had migrated here. :( I don't miss the bad winters we had been having recently in VA, but it is really weird living down here.

Florida has the absolute worst drivers I have ever witnessed (and dodged) on a daily basis and it's not the turrists, it's the locals.

I love northern VA, but you're right about the cost of living; it's ridiculous. I actually love the winter and having for distinct seasons here. Anyway, I know the cost of living in FL is lower, but I don't know if I could put up with the general stupidity and annoyances I encountered down there. I didn't notice that stuff when I was a kid and I went down there for vacation, but I do when I go down there now. And yeah, the drivers are terrible in FL, but the D.C. metro area is pretty bad too.

This is Florida, son. When someone kills someone else with a gun they make it easier to get guns AND kill people with them.

In Florida, if you kill someone with a gun, they arrest you, then hand you a gun and make you kill at least three more people. Only this time, high on meth: the way God intended murders.

Right here.

First off, let me say that the Huffington post is hardly a reliable or unbiased source.

The "internet cafes" they shut down were all fronts for organized crime. So good riddance to them. They cloaked them selves as a charitable organization for veterans, and said they gave 70% to charity, and it turns out they gave around 2 %. Most of the money went to politcal campaigns (to both parties) and to lobbyists.

In nearly 1,000 pages of affidavits, investigators said Allied Veterans ran 49 Internet cafes in Florida, including 16 in Central Florida, starting in 2007. The company claimed to donate 70 percent to 100 percent of its proceeds to charity but in reality gave away roughly 2 percent, according to records

Good intent, poor execution by the state. At least they are shut down.

Nope, here's what happened.

Orlando tried to put a local ordinance on the ballot that said all business must give all employees paid sick time. That meant all businesses, and all employees. So even a part time kid spinning a sign on the street would get paid sick time. Just another way to kill jobs and hurt small business.

Of course, there was another clusterfuck, and some other stuff that went on (this is Florida after all) and the measure never even made it to the ballot.

To prevent us from turning into California, with all thier wacky labor laws, the state passed a measure saying that local gov'ts can't enact a requirement to force employers to give paid sick leave to all employees.

So essentially it didn't ban companies from paying sick leave, it just didn't force them to give it to everyone.

makes sense to me :idk:
