yeah you got it. directors cut is way better. but yeah, a lot of these dudes should do some major fat trimming. except in the case of aliens, where the directors cut footage is so amazingly good that they should have just made the fucking movie longer. showing colony before incident + newt's parents going out to the downed ship in an epic planet buggy and getting facehugged + hologram wall in medical bay + newspaper article of ripley's daughter already having grown old and died because ripley was drifting in hypersleep so long + automated sentry guns = fuck yes.

[quote="ovid9I could seriously probably write 10 pages on what I hated about the transformers movies, and I never actually finished any of them. (Hell, I never even tried the last one.)[/quote]
Dude, I HAVE written ten pages just on what's wrong with using Devastator as a testicle joke and nothing more. The Transformers movies were travesties of film. The first one was almost acceptable on the stupid action flick scale, the second was a kick to the nuts to anybody that watched it, the third was like Michael Bay decided to take a shit on a CGI machine, smear the lense the cameras he used with it, then put it out with a couple explosions thrown in. Utter crap.
Anybody not understanding why there might be a little bit of excitement at the potential for a giant robot movie being made by the dude that gaves us shit like Pan's Labyrinth over the dude that gave us car commercials and Army recruitment videos disguised by dogs humping and mom's eating special brownies really needs to get over themselves. Unless you're a Joss Whedon hater, in which case, we've had this discussion and you're dead to me.
Who would have thought daring to be looking forward to something nerdy would cause this type of bomb-blast on the internet? Oh wait, anybody that's ever seen the internet. Carry on nerds.

and avatar was amazing, technologically. especially on mushrooms
But I don't care about that. The movie sucked on every level except slathering everything in CGI. It wasn't fun. It was annoying, and bad, and dumb.
Pacific Rim looks fun. That's all I ask out of stupid CGI blockbusters is fun. But most of them can't even deliver on that low a level because too many directors think every movie needs to be a 2.5-3hr epic showcasing their "skills."
It might end up not being fun, but I trust GDT to make a movie fun more than I do Michael Bay or James Cameron (who actually has done some really good films Avatar just wasn't one of them.)
Avatar was something that had to be seen in 3d. I saw it twice in theaters and really enjoyed both (regular and some "extended" version that had an unnecessary extra 9 minutes). I tried to watch it at home and turned it off after a little bit. It's not the same immersive experience.
Hoping to see pacific rim on Saturday, bu it's more likely that I'll wait until mid week when there are less people
Re: PACIFIC RIM: I have my ticket, do you?
lol
i cant see how anything....anything...involved with pans labyrinth would translate into a giant fighting robot movie. one could argue perhaps taste would, as michael bay has none, but mama disproved that. so whats left? maybe GDT will use more cgi than he has to? maybe the robots with have eyes in their hands that blink at us?
we could be film snobs all day and talk shit about these blockbuster cgi action flicks, or we can say screw tat lets have fun, they are entertainment.
its the "transformers? SUCKED. this? cant WAIT!!!!" dichotomy that is lulzy.

The ability to hold together a plot is something GDT has that Michael Bay doesn't even know exists. That's the part that has me excited. Hell, there's more plot in the previews for this one movie than there was in almost seven hours of Transformers movies. I'm not even asking for believable plot, I'm asking for something to keep me interested in the action.
I'm not a big believer in the idea that the only way things can be done is the way they've already been done. I totally understand your desire to use that concept to shit all over something that's not out yet. I get it, people don't want to be excited about anything, being so scared they'll be let down.
That's not my perspective. I'd rather get excited about something. Isn't life enough of a kick in the nuts without trying to suck the joy out of the possibility of giant fucking robots fighting giant fucking monsters?
Re: PACIFIC RIM: I have my ticket, do you?
oh i agree with the optimism--in a general sense. and god, i hope you're right. just resting the hopes on THIS one in particular....lets just hope that works out.
however, where do see any more plot in this, or even any room to have one, more so than any of the aforementioned?
its just one recycled invasion movie line after another in the trailer. "we're not the army anymore...we're the resistance!" chilling.
i just dont see any of GDT's good traits translating into this movie.
ovid: hates CGI, likes mama and is excited about PR

both of these, actually

If I saw the previews for PR and it had Bay attached to it (or some other big budget hack, for that matter), I would have admittedly been sh*t-talking the film. The fact that Del Toro is involved does bring, for me, a huge sense of "it's going to be done right and will be awesome as f*ck". Like "Super 8" as opposed to say, Men in Black 12.

DUDE...
loved Super8. Great ET gone evil (though really not evil) ripoff in the best of ways. Great throwback to Spielberg era when I liked his filmmaking.
Cloverfield would have been great had I not vomited every 3 seconds due to shaky cam overload.

i could give a shit what you watch (though the porn thing in the movie thread is funny but also reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally creepy.)
and yeah i dont know what happened in super 8. we should e-rape it together! meandering, jagged plot, typical overuse of lens flare almost to the point of comedy, the train explosion

joss whedon should have done super 8, and at the end just filmed a closeup of his butthole farting. that would have been a twist-but-not-quite-m-knight-twist like cabin in the woods.

I'm not really angry

I used to be hyper-opinionated about music but I learned in my old age the rule of different strokes. Not the rule involving the adoption of urban children and taking them to live in a penthouse, but the one where everyone doesn't have to like the same thing.

See and I don't like Cabin in the Woods. And I should, judging by the rest of my nerd scale taste tendencies. I would have rather he just go with the cliches and run with that ball as opposed to the whole, government sanctioned sacrifice crap plot. Not impressed at all.

cabin in the woods though, i have to say, left me with the most perplexing feeling ive ever had leaving a movie. did that suck? did that suck BAD? did i just witness something great or the work of a retarded child?
thing is, i still cant tell. kudos for that i guess, joss. the controller dudes were cool.

Ugh. Nobody's. You're all wrong, with values of wrong ranging from as much as "completely," to as little as one-third. I have neither the time nor the inclination to enumerate my grievances, of which there are legion. You're all goddamned heathens with slightly better taste than Juggalos, but less than NASCAR fans.
Yes, I do realize there is a significant overlap between the two.

Saw it recently. Enjoyed it despite it being cheesy. I realize this makes me a horrible person.
I think maybe I passed through the necessity to piss on everything at some point over the last year. Oh no, internet thinks I fail because I have hope something might not suck.

Re: PACIFIC RIM: I have my ticket, do you?
Actually I love that movie. I used to watch it when I was a kid. One time when my family flew to Hawaii, my older brother would randomly look over, smile, and do the thumbs up thing. Shit had me rollin' when I was a kid. Basically this:

Amy wants to see Pacific Rim bad but thats cause she LOVES Jax Teller.

Who doesn't love Jax Teller? I'm hoping he gets another chance to beat the fuck out of Clay, in a totally unrelated reality. That'd be like bonus points.
