I can file the police report, the state will prosecute (credit card fraud, especially on state-owned store premises).
I have the option of additionally filing civil charges for the breaking and entering and credit card fraud (requires a lawyer, i don't have the time or money, broke college student).
But at least with a police report and all of the evidence he will be royally fucked for life. I have a close friend who is lead detective for my county's PD. He mostly deals with drug crime but this is gonna be pretty simple I think, he is calling me on Monday to discuss my options.
Also I have some epic fraud protection - I am not liable for a single charge.
A lot of colleges have lawyers you can use free of charge. I never used one but I know my college had the service available. Look into it.
Happened to me twice -- without the gheyness factor.
The first time I got a call from my bank saying someone had tried to purchase a Eurozone train ticket in Italy. The only person who had physically held my card was a pizza delivery guy from an Italian pizzeria. Bank got the cops to investigate but I never heard back. We never ordered from them again.
Second time, someone tried to buy a bunch of electronics from Best Buy, gas in Toronto and a few other things. The bank called when its software noticed a pattern different from my usual purchases. That one turned out to be a gas station attendant who was using a machine to swipe customers' cards to get their info. Again, cops were called in to investigate and there was some talk about me testifying but I never heard back.
I'm not sure about the States but here in Canada the major banks cover you 100 per cent for credit card fraud.

Dude, I hope you do all this! I understand the not being able to afford a lawyer part, but I'm sure if the judge is worth his weight in salt and the state does their due diligence, this kid should be in quite the pickle.
Not to mention he can also sue for all of his legal fees.
he's the criminal. He's got parents who can buy the best lawyers. He won't do time, but hopefully, it will scare the shit out of him. Even better yet, his parents might offer some nice incentive to drop charges.

he obviously doesn't value societal norms or others views as highly as some other people..........
go ahead - flame away - it's a slow day here anyway.
liking dick even though the christian right says "ew" and not thinking stealing is wrong/committing a felony are two very different things.
i also had a gas station attendant clone my card. some purchases made in VA while i'm living in TX, and wells fargo said it was a physical card swipe, but the card was in my wallet in my back pocket. 100% covered, replaced card. no worries.

Clearly, that attendant was gay, otherwise he would have valued the societal norm against theft. You're lucky you got away with only your credit card violated. Gas station attendant? More like ass station attendant.
